Darn it. Wine.

I enjoy a glass of wine once or twice a week with dinner. Lately though, my face is turning beet red even after just a few sips. It feels kind of like a hot flash and it's embarrassing, especially when we go to dinner with friends! My face gets so red! What does that mean?

Does it mean I can't tolerate wine? Am I allergic to it or to its sulfites? Anyone else have a similar experience? I can't say if this happens or not with other alcohol because I don't like beer or liquor.

FWIW, I have in the last few years become allergic to raw bananas, watermelon, and acetominaphen.

I have developed the same issue...It seems to only happen with my when I am dehydrated...I am also EBF a 10 month old who is an avid nurser so before I have a glass of wine I make sure to have 3 glasses of water first...

has solved the problem for me

I've had that reaction to wine since I was 17 years old. I always assumed it was the sulfites. Then a couple of months ago I got hives from grapeseed oil. And my daughter reacted to organic seedless grapes. So I think its possible that I had a grape sensitivity too. But the main issue was the sulfites. I did drink one REALLY old red wine once that I didn't react to. Otherwise it was always a hot face, maybe a little bit itchy face, and an instant killer headache.

You could try an organic wine- those don't have added sulfites. (There are still natural sulfites in the wine, but none are added.) But you have to get "organic" and not "organically-grown" because they are 2 very different things in wine.

Grapes showed up as positives on my and DD's ELISA tests so you can be sensitive to grapes, but I've never had the red face reaction. I am so bummed because I love wine!

Hmm, I will have to look for those. I did buy some pomegranate wine at Whole Foods but haven't tried it yet. Says it is like a dessert wine. I am going to need something over the holidays when my in-laws are visiting!

Spike it with Rescue Remedy and tell everyone it is a "Special Holiday Wine". Seriously.
