My thumb hole is reverse...?

I've just finished the first hand of fetching and this was the first time I've ever had to pick up stitches or do anything like the thumb hole in this project. It seemed to all be going okay until I noticed that it was reverse... the wrong side is facing out, making the thumb appear garter stitch instead of stockinette. What did I do? Of course, I'll have to make the second one wrong on purpose now so it will match, but I'm not even really sure what I did in the first place haha! I thought I followed the instructions...

Help?

Sounds like you picked up the stitches for the thumb with the wrong side of the mitt facing you rather than with the right side facing you. It's an easy mistake to make especially on something small and in-the-round like a fetching!

Frog it. Honestly. It's not going to take that long, and it's worth it.

Okay, I frogged it... it was kinda ugly, because I'd already weaved in the ends but I'm back to where I started. Now what do I do differently? Can I take a picture, then one of you point to where I'm supposed to start? I would be so grateful!

OK, so you have your seven stitches at the top of the thumb and six at the bottom, yes? Your mitten should be the right side out (in knitting, always knit with the RS out)Start with the six stitches on the bottom DPN nearest to you and knit all the way across them. Turn, using a new needle (I use a needle like a crochet hook to pick up stitches) pick up two stitches between your DPNs, and then knit four off the top. Turn so that the needle with three stitches on is closest to you, knit three stitches and then pick up two more. Knit one row. It should be smooth, with no bumpy bits, and look recognisably like the outside of stocking stitch.

Basically, there's two ways you could have got this wrong before. You're either knitting with the points furthest away from you, instead of nearest (this is my guess), or you were knitting with the hand inside out. If you check for both things, you're going to be fine.

Okay, but do I use a third dpn for this? Because it doesn't say that in the pattern, but I assumed I had to because well, if I didnt i'd be knitting with the dpn on top and i assumed that would mess it up... but then later in the pattern it says "use a third dpn"... but i already had three?

And when i start knitting the bottom sts, do I put knitting needle underneath or overtop of the bottom needle? For example, if I knit from the right side of that needle, the second (third?) needle would be on the botom, but if i knit from the left side, the needle would be above, get what i'm saying? at first i knit it from the left, but then my knitting was in reverse when i went to go pick up sts from the left side, so i frogged that and started on the right, but then i ended up with the stockinette inside.

arrgh you make it sound simple but i'm just not getting it... i might drop into my lys for advice later.

Yes, you need four dpns to do this, but you're only knitting on two at a time, remember? (and on the points nearest to you.) You'll have stitches on three, and the one to knit onto.

So, picture your thumbhole as the base of a pot you're coiling like in ceramics, and the rest of the glove like a flat table. You're going to work from right to left (clockwise) and build the stitches outwards. Six at the bottom, new needle to pick up and take some of the stitches off the top needle, new needle for the rest of the stitches at the top and the last two you pick up. Right to left, working round the outside creating a nice smooth surface. You can do this. Honest.
