HIB and side effects

I just vaccinated my 1 year old with her second HIB shot today. She had her first one over 3 months ago, and DTaP over 4 months ago.

I hate vaccinating her and I think this is IT. I hate waiting for any reactions. She did well on the first HIB and I hope she sails through this one. I saw Dr. Lauren Feder in LA and she has my LO taking homeopathic Thuja occidentalis for 3 days.

I noticed her after she woke up that she was shivering and acting strange in her high chair. I started freaking out and calling the nurse advice line. The shaking stopped and now she's playing normally right now. It did scare the crap out of me.

Does anyone know the side effects of HIB. According to Dr. Sears, it is one of the safest of all vaccinations. How long should I watch her. my understanding is, for a week.

Worried mom!

They manage to trick us and push us into vaccinating our kids with their fear mongering, even if every fiber in our body screams NOOOOOOOooooo...

Someone will come and tell you the side effects of the vaccine directly. For me the worst is serotype replacement. That means the few bacteria that are covered in the vaccine create a void and other bacteria will take their place. And we don't know anything about them. They may be much more damaging.

A reaction is generally within a 48 hour period but it can be a long time down the road, like with the bacteria replacement I was describing.

Here is an article that gives you some valuable information -

What kind of info do you want? From the CDC, package inserts or medical literature?

The biggest concern with this vaccine if the link it has had to an increase in Type 1 diabetes in kids under 4 years of age. This is well documented in the literature

Infectious Disease in Clinical Practice (Vol 6; 1997 p. 449)

Diabetes Care (Vol 16 1993 p. 1606)
(Vol 21 1998 p. 1278)

British Medical Journal (Vol 315; 1997 p. 713)
(vol 318; 1999 p. 1169)
(vol 319; 1999 p. 1133)

Unfortunately this will not be a side effect that comes out for a while as it is not an "immediate" reaction. This is the main reason I opted out tof the HIB vaccine along with the issue of serotype replacement that Gitti has talked about.

Just what to watch out for in the week after the shot? When am I in the clear? Today she seems sleepy and cranky. This will most likely be the last shot she ever gets in the first year. I have to now decide on the MMR.

The most common concern with the new conjugate HIB vaxes is the increased risk of contacting HIB for 5-10 days after vaccination. The vax causes a decease a temporary decrease in antibody levels that create a temporary susceptibility to infection. Fast onset of GBS symptoms have also been reported within 10 days of vaccination. Thrombocytopenia (a decrease in blood platelets responsible for clotting) has also been reported immediately after the HIB vax. I think the most "immediate" reactions to be on the lookout for are fever, uncontrolled cying, swelling at injection site and seizures.
I think in another 8 days if your LO hasn't exhibited any of the usual causes for concern you could say she is "in the clear"......
