I don't think you are alone. While the spells and things don't really hold attraction to me, the living more in tune with the natural world really does. All the season changes holidays and some rituals as well as some of the natural herbal things makes sense to me. I don't think that living in rhythym with the land is necessarily contraditory to my Christian faith. I would, however, be uncomfortable taking part or having my children take part in things that really go against what I believe, like some of the fertility rituals.

There is a school of thought that believes many of the Christian traditions are based on pagan ones. Perhaps if you explore those ideas, you may more easily reconcile your beliefs.

It's called Christopagan and there are a few of us floating around with variations of course.

I was gonna say what gun said. There are a lot of similarities in Christian and Pagan religions. This is part of the reason "some" Christians don't want to celebrate Christmas b/c it is loosely based on Pagan traditions like the yule log, decorating the tree, etc. Easter is also based on Pagan traditions. This is a debate a lot of Christians use in not celebrating the "Christian" holidays and instead turning to the biblical holidays. Do some research and see where it stands with you. Even so if you look into the biblical holidays they are mostly based on harvest times or season changes also much like the Pagan rituals are. JMO there but I think there are a lot of similarities in the two if you look. Do some research to see how you feel and where you stand.

I don't think using herbs and studying herb use or being in tune with nature/season changes/etc would go against being a Christian. Just see what YOU feel about it.

From a Pagan/polytheistic perspective there is nothing wrong with loving Jesus. Lots of Pagans combine different belief systems to form their own path.

I'm sort of in the same boat. Was raised in secular household, all of us were very connected with Nature and even as a young child, I really felt connected with something Divine. Since I can recall, I've always been interested in the various aspects of Earth-based religions. Now, in the last few years, I've found myself on a more Christian path. I'm just learning along the way. Perhaps some people disagree with how you can be drawn to both things but I feel it's up to an individual - what they want to believe, how they worship.

Hi, I wondered if any of you might be interested in commenting in my thread in religious studies, about Christianity and Gaia. I realize Gaia and Wicca are not the same thing, since Gaia is not a religion, but actually a hypothesis about how our environment is really one interconnected organism ...

But, anyhow, here's the link for Aquafina or anyone else who might be interested -- I'd love your input!

I'm a Christian who used to be Pagan. There are 2 main differences to me now. One is I believe in God in the Christian sense, as the creator and beyond something we made up and made real through belief which is what I used to think. The other is that I now want to let God lead my life and trust God with the power I'd otherwise myself direct through spells and so forth...I figure God's better at it than me. Others choose differently. I still love nature and seek to be in tune with it. I use natural remedies, brewing teas or using oils. I don't think that's wrong in the least. It wasn't so easy at the start, I'd feel threatened by spiritual forces and want to protect myself on my own. I'm totally at peace with where I'm at regarding these things now.

Someone whose mother was Wiccan once told me that it wasn't about the power -- she actually said that Harry Potter didn't bear any resemblance to Wicca (well, I guess everyone kind of knows that anyway ).

So I was wondering what you mean about "directing power?" This daughter told me that for her mother, it wasn't about power -- if I remember right, she said that communing with the earth was a form of prayer. It came across more like her mom tried to get herself in line with this whole process that was already going on ...

And in a sense, that's how I see prayer, the more I grow in the Lord. It's not really about "getting Him to do what I want Him to do" -- though of course I often do make requests of Him. But I see real prayer more as listening to and flowing with God, partaking of and communing with His heart and mind.

One thing I think Christianity has been weak on, is that we really really have disengaged ourself from this wonderful organism that we're a part of. I'm still grappling with a lot of these issues: I realize this world is not our permanent home, and God doesn't want us to be overly-attached to the things of the world.

But somehow I think we've interpreted that command in the wrong way -- maybe it has something to do with the Religious Right wanting to do away with the environmentalists, so that capitalism can run rampant without any hindrances.

Another issue is the whole idea that our environment doesn't matter, because this earth is headed for destruction regardless, and then God will just create a new heaven and earth. I need to study up on this more, because I'm not sure what all this means -- I just no longer believe that the Religious Right has it right.

It's not a school of thought, but actual history. Almost all major christian holy days were specifically scheduled on top of previous pagan (meaning non christian) holy days and patterned similarly in order to ease the transition of pagan followers to christianity. Easter, Halloween, Christmas etc are all patterned almost exactly after very long standing traditions of previous cultures/belief systems, including the belief of a human son of god, resurrection as redemption for humanity etc. I have a long list of links and books, if anyone is interested...it's fascinating stuff!
