Scarf and socks for teens - thoughts?

My lovely nieces, 16 and 18, asked me to give them knitted xmas gifts this year. One wants socks and the other wants a long scarf. I'm thrilled to be asked but not sure what would appeal to teens. Can I get feedback on these:

Do you have to get them done by Christmas? cause that isn't a lot of time (at least for me to finish something).... I love the drop stitch scarf- another one to think about (super quick and easy) is My So Called Scarf- look it up on ravelry.

Socks- my fastest most fav pair is Monkey (on knitty) using trekking and size 1 1/2 needles.

I am doing mine in a peachy/pinky/yellow/orange handpainted double stranded fingerling- and I think they will be so beautiful! Oh- and not to mention the fact that they will be super fast!

They look pretty and really easy! DN likes mislatched socks, so she asked me to make them in different colors. I'm using Mountain Colors Bearfoot in Alpine and Firestorm.
