First time in close proximity to a circ today. Yuck!

So, I had to hang around at my OB's office for about 4 hours today, since I was getting the 3 hr glucose test. A young couple came into the waiting area with a baby boy in a carrier. A nurse came out to talk to the couple, and it was clear from the conversation what he was there for.

I had to go for another blood draw at that point, and when I got back the baby was gone, and the parents were just sitting there. I guess they were either to cowardly to go back with him, or they weren't wanted back there, or both. The room where it was being done was evidently well soundproofed, as I didn't hear anything until he emerged back into the hallway.

After a not very long period (not long enough for an anesthetic to have taken much effect) a smiling nurse appeared to tell the parents that he was "done", and to bring them back. After a couple of minutes I could here the sound of crying in the hallway, and they all emerged back in the lobbly. The poor kid was obviously very unhappy, and wailed while being put back in his carrier.

It's always bothered me when I've heard people talking about it, but this is the first time that I've ever been there when one was actually happening, and I found if very disturbing on a really visceral level. It didn't help that I was already queasy from that sickening glucose drink.

My upcoming twin boys will definitely NOT be going through that.

Anyway, I know there's not a damn thing I can do about it, but I appreciate being able to get it off my chest in a forum where people understand where I'm coming from.

Oh, and I apparently passed my glucose test.

I'm so sorry you and that baby had to endure that. However, congratulations on passing your glucose tolerance test! I love hearing how you're having twins and keeping them intact.
Check your pm box. I sent some info although now I don't know why I didn't just say it here - you can make a difference. If you take a childbirth class at the hospital, make sure you bring circ up and be armed with things like the AAP guidelines and how leaving boys intact is very easy (and how more boys are staying intact these days). It might lead to good conversation or at least get more parents to do research at home.

Sorry you had to go through that.

The only situation I have been in similar to yours is when I went to the hospital to visit my sister after she had her baby and I bumped into a former co-worker of mine. She was on the main floor of the hospital. She was bauling her eyes out, had her arms crossed, and her husband had her arm around her. I immediately thought someone had died. I stopped to talk to her and she told me that she was SO angry with A (her husband). He started chucking and said "he'll thank you when he's older". Turns out their 8 day old baby boy was being circumcised on the 4th floor of the hospital and the doctor told them to leave that floor of the hospital so they dont hear him crying. :

.....yet it is still okay to do that to him......

"Oh, he'll scream his head off, but that doesn't mean anything. Babies are always crying! lol!"

OMG...how incredibly wonderfully sympathetic that man is. How could anyone think that sort of pain was funny?!? Sick sick sick!!

Crunchy Frog, congrats on keeping your babies intact! :

I saw a video of a baby being circ'd and it made me feel so disturbed.... I am sure that if parents were required to be with their baby, the rates of circ would be even lower than they are now. That's probably one reason many hospitals and doctors offices don't encourage parents to stay with their poor newborns when they practice MGM.

Good for you for being smart about this!

Best of luck on your pregnancy and delivery, hope it goes well!

I do not understand as a parent how you willingly walk away from your child in agony. I think if the baby has to be forced to be "brave" then the parents should be too. They make the decision to mutiliate their sons and then get to leave because the sound of their baby screaming would be too painful for them!? No one gives a rat's behind about the baby's pain. So cowardly! I get so angry at this!!!!!!!! I agree parents should have to watch a circ video before they hand their helpless babies over. Ugh!

I agree 100%.

I think the parents should be required to be at the babies side while it was done.

The OB did it? Really? I didn't think that's how/when/where it was done.

I only have girls.

The more people that come here to post stories like this.. the better! You are a small part of a huge army of people speaking out. That is exactly what we need to do to end this crime against babies. Thank you for doing your part. Your vote counts!!!

I call this post of yours a 'surveillance report'. We need more of these!!! A LOT MORE. thanks.

TO THE BABYCUTTERS OF AMERICA: ALL EYES ARE ON YOU!!!

Actually, I think it was the nurse practitioner. On her little blurb on their website she boasts about providing this "unique service".

I think it really varies from place to place and practice to practice.

It would be nice if I lived in a civilized society and didn't have to be around that kind of thing.
