Study: Nations inflate vaccine numbers to get more aid

"Some countries appear to be cashing in on a global program that boosts childhood vaccinations by paying $20 for every new child who gets a shot, a study out Thursday shows.
Researchers found that many countries dramatically inflated the number of children said to have received diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis vaccine, thus boosting the amount of money the governments received.

Pakistan tops the list, claiming in 1999 that more than 1.7 million children were newly vaccinated. It reaped more than $35 million in the bonus payments. Instead, household surveys found that just 250,000 children had gotten shots, justifying just $5 million in payments."

I don't get it. Then why would they be inflating #'s? It has to be going to someones pockets somewhere.

I was thinking the same thing! Doesn't make sense to inflate numbers if somebody somewhere is not profitting from it.

It is always going into someone's pocket and they are the ones inflating the numbers. That is done with the knowledge of our government officials or whoever allocates the money for their program. Ultimately it is from our tax money going up the pyramid to enrich someone who is already filthy rich. It will never go to people who need it. I am glad that it was not actually given as vaccines. But that is a different discussion altogether.

No surprise to me, though I expect the vaccine manufacturers know exactly what's going on since they have the actual numbers of doses sold on record. It should be easy to check.

It seems like they're trying to differentiate between individuals (presumably somehow associated with the government's vaccination programs) getting this money for themselves, and this money going to the government vaccination program as a whole and then being used however the program allocates that money.
