Arg! Help me find independent movies

The only things that come to my town are the blockbusters. And they have uniformly sucked this year, to the point that we don't even want to go out to the movies anymore. I really wanted to see Flash of Genius with Greg Kinnear, but it was only at the farthest theatre from us and only for 1-2 weeks. Ugh.

This is what I want: a newsletter or something online that describes the new releases that aren't JUST the blockbusters, so I can rent the other ones, but I don't watch TV or go to many movies, or read the newspaper... so I just want to be informed because I know I must be missing out on a lot. Also, recommendations of older movies would be great, too. Thanks!

Don't know of a newsletter, I search new releases in Indie films on netflix and add them to my queue.

have you tried http://www.apple.com/trailers/ ?
i watch movie trailers there. sometimes it tells me about a movie *way* in advance, so it's not exactly good for making a DVD list, unless you're a good planner. but that's basically the only place i ever hear about movies. also, there are online movie review columns. i read the onion AVclub (avclub.com) sometimes.

Scarecrow Video in Seattle... If it was made into a movie... then they have it!

Doesn't IMDB describe pretty much every movie?

Slumdog Millionaire was an indy picked up by Fox - does that still count? - have you seen it yet? I loved it. If it hasn't hit your town yet, it will. Also, not an indy, but I saw Milk this weekend and it was excellent also.

You can also just check Blockbuster.com or Netflix each month to read about all the new releases and rent the ones that didn't hit your town.

I have rented some seriously bizarre movies from there.

Laemmle Theaters in Los Angeles shows lots of independent films and has weekly e-mails that you can sign up for. They have a general e-mail and then give you the ability to sign up for specific types of films: Chinese language, Jewish, documentary, animation, Gay and Lesbian, etc.

Here's the link: http://www.laemmle.com/
