Ds1 had 2 and 4 month shots but 3 yr old ds2 and 7 month old dd have had no shots. Now there have been a couple of pertussis outbreaks where I live in western PA. Make me not worry.

I caught pertussis when i was 6 years old and i was vaccinated. It was awful but i got over it. Just be prepared. Vit C and whatever herbs you use for sickness.

Gosh, I don't think it's that easy to get. You do have to be close to someone who actively has wc. I was exposed to three cousins all at the same time, with wc and I didn't get it. Funny.

Anyway, I would get sodium ascorbate (Vita C) at home plus pulsatilla a homeopathic remedy.

The SA (sodium ascorbate) works really well. You probably have to order it on line from a vitamin shop.

The vaccination is only 85% effective anyway.

There was an outbreak in an area we were visiting last week, and our naturopath said if you start treating it right away it isn't so bad. He didn't say how you treat pertussis, though. The PP's suggestion of vitamin C is good, though.

How are sodium ascorbate and ascorbic acid different?

I genuinely don't believe the efficacy of the vaccine is 85%.

I would put it lower near 50% to 60%.

There just seem to be so many cases some years.

I also thought it peaked in the summer, not winter?

I have read report sthat the DTaP has shown to be anywhere from 30% to 85% effective...thats abig spread...IMO i don't think they have a clue how effective it really is. My son is 7 months old and unvaxed....It would suck if he got it, but Id treat with SA and homeopathic medicine and chances are he'd be fine...don't worry mama!

Pertussis is most dangerous in babies less than 6 months. Your baby is past that risky time.

There is always pertussis going around. Some years its more than others because its a cyclical disease but its always there. You can check the CDC's MMWR and see what its like for your area.

If they get it do SA to gut tollerance and visit your chiro. 5 of my 7 had it and they made it through just fine. In fact my youngest dd hasn't had asthma since so I think it actually might have *helped* her.
