natural remedies for UTI?

I know there must be some out there. I tried doing a search in this forum, but didn't come up with what I'm looking for exactly.

I have a 21mo intact son who has a UTI. I just tested his urine and it came up positive. I have no health insurance and no money to take him to the doc. Plus, I know they'll just prescribe him antibiotics and I really want to avoid those at all costs. He's never been on them, ever.

So are there some herbal rememdies, or something I can buy over the counter that will get rid of this UTI? I know cranberry juice can help a lot, but will it make it go completely away?

I wasn't sure if this would be best answered here, or in the health forum.

Anyway, any help would be much appreciated!

I know many here will disagree with me, but I want to urge you to reconsider natural treatments for UTIs in children! I tried natural remedies while in college with my first UTI. Within 1 day, it had rapidly turned into a double kidney infection and I was in so much pain, that I was doubled over and couldn't move. I never had any nausea or fever to signal that the infection was so bad. I ended up in the ER on IV antibiotics and pain meds, had to take an extremely long course of powerful antibiotics, and then had to go through various tests and x-rays to monitor kidney damage. If I had just gone to the doctor as soon as I suspected that I had a UTI, I would have only gone on a 3-7 day course of milder antibiotics, and wouldn't have dealt with all the other harmful medications and procedures.:

i know you already found what you needed, but i'm posting anyway:P

d-mannose is the best natural treatment i've found. it's a glyconutrient and works quickly to help with pain and infection. if your child has frequent infections you can give a very small dose daily to keep bacteria flushed away. i run a health food store and of all things people have purchased for this purpose, d-mannose is the product most people come BACK for.

100 percent real cranberry juice, I used to get UTIs all of the time and that would always work for me.

Hey mama, not to scare you or preassure inot anything, but if your LO gets another one you should really go in and see a Dr. My dd has something called Kidney Reflux and it cause cronic UTI infections.....anyways everytime she gets a UTI it can cause damage to her kidneys....and eventually it can cause kidney failure (when an adult).

Can you apply for CHIPS or Medicaid for you LO?

to prevent UTIs or other infections please make sure to eat loads of foods with vitamin C. Stock up with fruits, eat 2 to 4 fruits everyday including natural orange juice. You can even mix it with tangerines. When u eat raw foods you prevent a lot of infections!

I also STRONGLY recommend real antibiotics in your sons case. He is very young with a immune system which is not as strong as an adults. UTI's are not the kind of stuff you mess with. In a country which really does not understand how to care and treat for a intact penis, its up to you to keep your son in the best health as possible now. If there are more complex problems that develop later, who knows how the doctor will want to "treat" the problem. And with a more complex problem you may not be able to see what really is the best solution for your son.

Best of luck with what you decide to do (or have decided to do).

wow, thanks for all of the helpful advice

I've applied for healthcare through our state, and even though they say we qualify, they denied us due to lack of funds for the program. :

Of course if this becomes serious, I won't hesitate to take him to a doc. His symptoms just started today and I happened to have some strips to test his urine. He's never had any type of infection before and has only been to the doctor once his whole life. (I thought he had a rash when he was a newborn, but he was fine). I got some whole cranberry juice, unsweetened, and a homeopathic remedy. He drank a bunch of the juice...surprisingly because it's so bitter.

He talks very well, and told me that his penis hurt and that it's "an owie when I pee". He even brought me some of my lotion and asked me to rub it on him in hopes he would feel better Right before bed though, he went potty with no troubles and no complaints.

I'm feeling that I'll wait and see how he's doing tomorrow and then go from there. I admit I was writing this off as a minor thing, when I guess I really shouldn't. I guess I'm mostly scared about having to deal with doctors. I don't want to hear that I should have my boy circ'd, or that he'll have to be retracted to cath and all of that. He uses the potty though, so I guess I wouldn't even need to worry about a cath. He could just pee in a cup.

anyway, thanks again

My son had a UTI and every alternative practitioner I see said to get the antibiotics. He sees a homeopath, an acupuncturist and a chiropractor and all said antibiotics and right away. I was shocked. I expected all kinds of natural remedies and such and stuff about holding firm against antibiotics because they can weaken the immune system. Everyone said antibiotics to get rid of the infection and then work to prevent them in the future. He now takes a chinese herbal formula to prevent them.

My son gets catheterized 4 times a day without retraction. No worries there - you just need to make sure you ask the right questions. Also- if he can pee in a cup, then he can do that.

Doctors can be pains and difficult for people who generally do natural family living, but sometimes they are necessary.
