I'm heading to the library in a little while, and wondered if you guys have any book recommendations for me?
I'll read pretty much anything (It doesn't have to be birth related)
In my last DDC someone suggested "Baby Catcher" which I really enjoyed.

Have you read Our Babies, Our Selves by Meredith Small? (I think that is her name the book is in the car at the moment though) I find that book fascinating and am enjoying reading it again.

I have LOVED Ina May Gaskin's Guide To Childbirthing!

As far as birth books, I really like anything by Ina May Gaskin, and I recently read a book called Pushed by Jennifer Block that I liked a lot. It is kind of along the lines of the Business of Being Born movie, if you saw that, but it has lots of research in it and stuff. It made me angry about maternity care in the US, but it also motivated me to seek out the best care for me, even though it is 100 miles away.

Non-pregnancy related, I just read a book called Kindred by Octavia Butler and seriously couldn't put it down.

I agree, Ina May Gaskin is great.

If you are looking for an interesting read, I enjoyed Steingraber, Sandra's "Having Faith: An Ecologists Journey to Motherhood. ..."

The book goes through the story of the pregnancy and birth of Sandra's first child. In addition, Sandra shares a lot about the science of birth. I particularly thought the information about fetal development was really interesting. A great book!

Ina May's Guide to Childbirth was also my favorite!

I also liked A Thinking Woman's Guide to Better Birth

I love that book! I read it when I was pregnant with my first. I highly recommend it. It's not a baby guide, but more of a world view of babies in different cultures. It is easy to read and very helpful if you end up with a baby that acts outside our current American cultural norms.

I just finished The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery. I'd bet someone has it checked out already, since I had to put a hold on the copy at my library. But it is the best book I've read all year. Second best would be The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz.

I'm also currently reading the Earth's Children series by Jean Auel (Clan of the Cave Bear, etc.). It's not exactly literature, but great for when you want something totally escapist.

I also read Misconceptions by Naomi Wolf recently, which has to do with how the medical establishment lets down pregnant women. I would recommend it for any mom or mom-to-be.
