how long to i *really* have to soak kefir grains?

I just got my water kefir grains in the mail and am SO anxious to get some brewing. They're dehydrated and came with directions to soak in water for "a day to wake them up". Do I really have to wait that long? Or will a good 5-6 hour soak do OK?

When I re-hydrated the water grains I got in the mail, it took 2 days before they got all fluffy and gelatinous-like. If that is an indication of them waking up, then a 5-6 hour soak might not be enough time. I let them soak 3 days and then made water kefir and coconut milk kefir, both delicious
