Hi, all! Congratulations to the other new mamas I haven't congratulated yet (Terra, and I think there were a couple of others). I'm glad to see lots of us able to join the postpartum thread now.
I'm home from the hospital now and all went well with my baby's birth. It was, as you might recall, a repeat c-section planned at the last minute for reasons even I don't entirely understand, although it was my choice. The birth went very smoothly, and although I didn't have that wonderful birthing high at the end, I was surprised at how satisfied I am with the experience.
Baby Odin was born at 8 pounds 9 ounces, 20 inches long, with a 15-inch head circumference. He handled being smooshed out of the womb without warning with considerable aplomb, and pinked up right away. His apgars were 9 and 9. They waited to cut his cord until it stopped pulsing (which happened quickly), and just minimally wiped him off before letting him rest skin-to-skin across my breasts while the doctor was tying my tubes and stitching me up. After we returned to my room, they didn't try to do any of the newborn procedures (other than a weight check) before he had nursed.
He's a champion nurser already. He nursed for a solid hour once we got back to my room, and then about every 40 minutes for most of the first 24 hours. At the end of the first 24 hours, I had mature milk.
He's way more mellow than my first two. He does cry when unhappy, but is so easy to settle!
I'm recovering pretty well, I think. I just have some soreness at my incision site. I'm trying to take it easier than I would have after a normal birth, but so far I can do most of the things I want to do.
I forgot how much nursing leads to hunger. I guess I'll go raid the refrigerator again! We need some better non-dairy snacks around this house.
