Making a scarf from SOCK yarn?

I bought some lovely Noro sock yarn (one day sale at the LYS) intending to make a scarf with it. The store had a "shop pattern" they gave that is interesting - it involves dropping stitches so there are gaps with just strings of yarn (I'm not describing it well).

I'm willing to do this pattern, but was wondering if anyone knew of a cool scarf pattern using sock yarn. Anybody tried it?

Was it a clapotis scarf?

I think anything kind of lacy would look nice

No - similar idea, but the rows of stitches went sraight accross, and the "string" sections were several inches each, and then there were inches of stringy tassles at the end. It was lovely - but I worry about all those inches of unknit sock yarn getting caught on things, breaking the yarn...

That knitty pattern may be a good choice too. I do think a lacy pattern will do well - just want to find something hip, not grandmotherly

I just mad eone using two skeins of yarn in different coloraways, in a ripply/chevron type pattern. Very cool, very time consuming. I think it is from last minute knitted gifts.

I just queued one from knitty on ravelry - the Lace Ribbon Scarf. (Rav linky here)
I may do it before clapotis (which I hope to knit one day) since it can be a single skein project, and I never have enough time to knit.

Sharon, I'm planning on casting on for that in the new year, if you fancy a KAL? It's been in my queue forever, and I have some seasilk from a MBOY I want to use up on it.

Becca, I'm knitting Wabenschal at the moment and whilst I'm knitting in laceweight, the pattern is written for fingering. It's simple enough that it would look good in Noro, too. Another possibility is that you could knit from each end of the ball and create stripes...

Helen, that would be great!

And I've saved that wabenschal pattern - beautiful! I've never knit from a chart before, but that one looks manageable to me. I've some beautiful laceweight left over from the feather and fan scarf I knit my mom, from a handpaintedyarn co-op....

It's a fast knit Unfortunately the spinner-in-training keeps getting his hands on my knitting and pulling a needle out, which is always a bugger when you're knitting lace I underestimated how much yarn I had as well- I thought I only had 50g, but I'm pretty sure there's 100g there, so it's turning out to be a long but gorgeous scarf. Will go take a picture soon, I promise.

I've seen and fondled a number of scarves, shawls, and hats made with sock yarn -- with Noro specifically, but others too -- and I'd caution that any sock yarn with a nylon content is always, always going to feel like it has nylon in it. The nylon, it's a helpful strengthening element for a garment that you're going to walk on, but why would you add something so icky feeling to something you're going to wear around your neck? Plenty of fingering weight yarn around that is pure wool.

My opinionated two cents' worth.
