Pro-Vax Piece for This American Life - Page 4

As the mother of a Vaccine damaged child ( I use that term purposely) I do not trust much in the money and convenience motivated Medical system. My daughter does not have Autism and she did not receive Mercury containing vaccines. I'm annoyed when that is the only aspect that the media touches on. People can be harmed in a wide variety of ways and thousands are. You did a great job.
Thank you for doing this piece.

Bubbles,
Thank you so much for doing this; as soon as I heard that part of the piece, I thought, "I wonder if she is on MDC!" You were the best "anti-vax" mom I have ever heard in the media.
I thought the show was good-- not great, but good. They acknowledged that the debate was heated, they tried to present both sides, Offit was not interviewed, and the reporter seemed sympathetic to the idea of not exposing her children to toxins (imagine that...) It could have been so much worse.

I totally agree! You have no idea how often I have told the media that it is soooooo much more than Autism and mercury. One thing they often make a mess of is mixing up the MMR and the mercury debate. Never was mercury in MMR yet was the first to be linked to autism. So, even w/ reduced mercury (another mistake they make) we can't get away from that. Then, of course are all the other issues. Argh. I do agree that she did a better job than most of touching on other issues. I also feel like she did a better job of doing her outside research to back up what she was saying. It was more accurate than most.

It is very interesting that most articles, interviews, etc. do not discuss issues other than autism. I think one of the reasons for that is that it is easy to find plenty of studies that show no correlation. While it is true that there are many of those studies, they ignore those that do show a correlation and also don't acknowledge the holes and inaccuracies in the studies.

Anyway, if we could get the information out there about all the other concerns it would make a greater impact. I so wish that parents like you w/ vaccine injured children could have a chance to speak out. I think in a lot of ways your stories could really impact the public by making it more real. They have been brainwashed to believe that the autism stories aren't related to vaccines so discussing other types of injuries would be so helpful. If we could convince more parents that the concerns are real then the FDA and CDC would have to actually work toward a safer and more effective system that didn't cause so much harm.

Thanks. It has taken practice to figure out what to say and what not to say. I have a wonderful group of friends that have helped me. Wouldn't it be great if a group of us could get some live air time and really talk about the unedited truth!

I did find it annoying that American Life piece once again brought up the mmr/autism lancet retraction as if it was 'case closed'. Just continues the brainwashing...

And as compelling as a case they made with the mom with the measles, I could have offered up some moms in my life, one in particular who had a perfectly normal son who was given 7 shots in one day ("make up shots") and was never, never the same after---autism. Let me know if you want to produce your own piece for This American Life. Couch it under the topic--- "The time I felt screwed by following the rules". I'm sure my mom friend will be happily interviewed by you, Bubbles.

But if you don't want those generalizations, you shouldn't use them yourself and that might help in seeing the other possibilities out there.

So, when someone says "you can choose not to vaccinate because other do vaccinate" it sounds condescending to me. I choose not to do the rotavirus vaccine because I feel the risks are greater than the benefits and I feel it has not been studied enough (even the FDA says they are awaiting more testing results).

My kids have had rotavirus; it made me think twice about my decision for the baby, but, in the end, we decided against it. The fact that the experience of the disease has not changed my mind would seem to be a big chunk of evidence that we don't just choose not to do this one 'because everyone else does and it allows me to choose not to.'
a little OT, but my VERY PRO VAX Dr. told me NOT to do the rotavirus vaccine for my DD. I was not going to anyway, but I was shocked. She told me it was VERY dangerous in her medica opinion!

That's a really condescending statement. The exposed kids were quarentined for 3 weeks. Perhaps if you're a SAHM, or are very comfortable financially, it's no hardship to be quarentined for that length of time. As a single mom who is my family's sole breadwinner, let me tell you, it would be an economic disaster if I had to miss that much work because my kid had been exposed to measles. It's nothing to be flippant about, regardless of your position on vaxing.
