That sneaky provisional cast on...

I decided to treat myself to a pair of Rainy Day Socks http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/rainy-day-socks out of a double strand of sock yarn (my LYS has like no sport weight anything). So I picked out some beautiful pink/orange/yellow stuff and get ready to start and then I decide to check out others on Rav just in case I find a change I love... I don't find anything I like better than the original- but I see tons with just a rib instead of the picot edge! Hmmmmm why? cause the provisional cast on double thick picot edge is a huge pita! Like you have got to be kidding!

Maybe just maybe I am not good at it- or probably I just lack experience and desire. So I am grumbling and decide to scratch the whole idea simply because I am lazy- so I cast on for a pair of socks for DH. He sees me do it and storming around and finally has to ask what my deal is. I tell him. He looks at me like I am the laziest person in the world and was like- so you are whining because you would have to put in an extra little 5 rows on each sock? Which did put things in perspective.

So I find a crochet hook. I do my provisional cast on. I knit the 11 rows for the picot edge- grumbling of course the whole time. Then it happens. I clearly did not cast on through the 'illusive back loop of the crochet chain'. I tediously spend an hour picking out that dang waste yarn to get my live stitches once again live. But you know what? It was totally worth it! I am loving how they are starting to look! :

So- if someone can explain to me what look exactly I am supposed to pick up when knitting- I would be so grateful- but even if I have to spend an hour picking out my thread- at least on the next sock I will be smart enough not to use a black yarn!

If you do it this way, you don't have to worry about the chain's orientation.

This one shows the side of the chain to use.

YOu could also just cast on normally with waste yarn, knit a couple of rows and then switch to your project yarn and start the pattern

Anytime I have to do a provisional cast on, I open up that second link and follow along. It helps tremendously.

hmmm- that is awesome. And definitely not what I did on mine! I can think of lots of applications for it- and knowing how to do it will make it that much better. Stupid google search- didn't bring up those!

Thanks!
