kid book suggestions

I am trying to stock up on library books for the holiday break. My daughter is 5 years old. She is beginning to read. Any suggestions for beginner reader books or your child's favorite kids book? Any craft books would also be good.

Frog in the Bog by Karma Wilson

We LOVE this book! We've checked it out countless times from our library over the last 4 years. My kids just don't get tired of it, at least not for long. We'd kind of forgotten about it for a while thinking our daughter was too old for it but she picked it off the shelf again last week to bring home. Now it's a favorite of ds'. There's enough repetition to make it early-reader friendly but it's not boring. It also lends itself really well to reading aloud with enthusiasm - lots of enthusiasm.

Other favorites that may or may not be at early reader level are pretty much anything by Cynthia Rylant, namely the Mr Putter and Tabby series, the Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa series, Jan Brett's books especially her Christmas books. Christmas Day in the Morning is a really sweet, touching book - I can hardly read it without tearing up. (If you don't do Christmas these books aren't heavy on religion, they're just fun or touching for anyone to read.) We also enjoy Amelia Bedelia books, Frog and Toad, Little Bear, Dr. Seuss.

Oh we recently checked out The Wolves Are Back by Jean Craighead George. Fabulous, gorgeous book. Explains how all things in an ecosystem are interconnected. Kid-friendly, though. I was really impressed with it.

I heartily second Cowboy Kate and Cocoa and Mr. Putter and Tabby. Also George and Martha, and two non-series books: Piggy in the Puddle and Sarah's Unicorn.

Some of my daughter's favorite read-alouds when she was five were the Madlenka books, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Miss Suzy, fairytales and folktales of all kinds, Bad Kitty, anything by Kevin Henkes, Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, Officer Buckle and Gloria, the Frances books, Eloise ... there are a lot!
