Should I worry?

We are having a boy in April and not circumcising. I read the article about never retracting the foreskin and to be careful around docs that may try to. Should I also worry if I put my son in day care? And should I mention at the church nursery??

Congratulations, what a lucky boy. : It is usually a good idea to just mention it and discuss appropriate care. Although you might be surprised to hear they have other intact boys and are familiar with it.

It's always a good idea to mention to anyone who is going to take care of your son, that they should never try to retract the foreskin, just wipe off the outside. People have a lot of mistaken ideas about foreskins, and some may well think they are SUPPOSED to be forcing the foreskin back and cleaning under it. You can given them the AAP care handout or the NOCIRC care handout, which says not to retract.

I would think if the daycare were a large one, with lots of different caregivers you would need to assure that everyone is familiar with this information, either by being sure that all employees get the handout, or that a brief inservice is given at a staff meeting or something.

Well I work in the church nursery where in the room our baby will be in and know for sure that all the boys so far are cut. I will make sure they get the AAP recomendations when he is born.
Not sure about the day care yet because we are not sure what is going to happen in the fall when I go back to school.
Thanks for your replies!

Seriously.

You can also protect yourself while in the hospital with polyester ankle bands that say "DO NOT circumcise or retract" ankle bands. They're free; do a Google for

"DO NOT circumcise or retract" ankle bands

And outfit your son from the first hour in onesies that say:

"DO NOT circumcise or retract (seriously, we'll sue)."

Get fancy ones at Zazzle:

Or cheaper ones at CafePress:

Generally, I find that the less diverse the area, the higher the circ. rate. So, regions that are mostly white, rural, and have low education levels are more likely to circ. than the converse. I think that's the truth in any state actually.
