I think the invitation Sir Nicholas gave Harry was to the 500th anniversary of his death day in 1492, which means Chamber of Secrets took place in 1992. Chamber of Secrets was in Harry's second year, when he was 12 y.o. 1992-12=1980.

Ah, a character I'd completely forgotten about, and didn't even recognize the name of! Something in Harry Potter I didn't know? Now the question makes a lot more sense- yeah, as an "undead" character he must have died before the book began. Obviously, since I didn't even know who he was, it's not who I was thinking of.
