X-Post in B&B: Is This a Valid Reason to Forego Newborn Screenings . . .

. . . or am I just out of my mind and overreacting?

And here is the full bill: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=s110-1858

I know that MDC mamas vary in opinions, but I've personally never had a problem with newborn screenings. Now that this new law is kicking in, however, I have my worries. Tracking this kind of thing for a "public health emergency" sounds to me like it could serve as a vax registry, only this time on a national scale. Any thoughts?

Yeah we have discussed the concerns about this on a number of threads. It's nothing to be taken lightly IMO.

Sorry to bring it up again, then. I must not have entered the right search terms to find it . . .

Oh my heavens. Have these people seen Gattaca?

I would avoid newborn screenings for many reasons, and this would be one of them. FWIW, none of my children had the screenings.

I had my first two screened with out any though but I researched and soul searched a lot last time and ultimately decided to do the screaning. This new bill would have definitely given me much more to think about and if I am in the position to make the decision again I don't know that I would do it.

I didn't know this.

Oh man...I hadn't seen this one. How many bills like this one went in under the radar during the past 8 years? Every time I turn around I hear about more legislation that happened during closed door sessions, or without any press whatsoever. I swear that this regime's toxic effects will last for 10 generations. :

oh no biggie, I can't even remember which forums they were talked about in, I think it might have been news and activism? It was awhile ago. It's an important issue and one that people may not know about still.

Are you talking about all screenings?

Or just those that take blood?

I'm asking because I am the mother of a Deaf Kindergartener. I hope that everyone will please let their children have a newborn hearing screening. It is the best way to find a hearing loss in a young child so they can be given language from the very beginning of life, just like every other child.

*steps off soapbox*

Thanks!

: that is so disturbing...I had not seen this either. I had the screenings and didn't give it much thought.

Can new parents refuse the newborn screening or choose just a part of it???

Since this is about newborn screening blood tests rather than about vaccines, please feel free to join the thread in B&B:
