Friend needs information on online homeschooling

Things are tough right now in a family we know. They're thinking about online homeschooling...which is not a free option in our state.

I sent them the time4learning info, so I don't need that link.

I'm wondering what other options are out there for online/computer based programs that don't require a lot of parental work.

The kids are 8 and 13 and the other alternative is public school.

Thanks for you ideas!

Oak Meadow and Calvert are secular programs that have on-line options. K12 is only on-line, and can be purchased by parents in states that don't have a virtual charter, though it is very expensive. We haven't used these, so I don't really know anything more than that they exist. There are most likely Christian options as well.

Christian stuff is out; they're pagan. They've been on that line between unschooling/relaxed that lots of folks hang out on.

I'll get the info on those programs to them. They are going to start time4learning now for sanity's sake...

Thanks for you help...and if anyone has other ideas, I'll pass them right along!

k12 and time 4 learning are the only ones i can think of. even calvert and oak meadow aren't online learning really...as they mail you textbooks still, etc. not much help to you unfortunately. have you checked homeschoolreviews.com? they should have info available. good luck.

Sonlight is open-and-go; they support independent learning for children in that age range. It isn't secular, but there are a lot of people who do it secular style--we do, and there's a whole yahoo group about it. It's literature-based, and we find it very rich. Hope this helps...

Thanks! Sonlight and Moving Beyond the Page are my in the back of my mind back up plans if we get to where we've got to do something more "plug and play."

Does anyone know how much k12 costs? I can't find that info on their website.

we are in our 2nd month of using the services of a curriculum provider here in Saskatchwan Canada. It is a new business, but it is affiliated with our University of Saskatchewan, and is accredited with our provincial Ministry of Education.

There are 2 choices - a "ala carte" menu with choices of LA, Math, SS, Science and Health/Arts Ed. You can choose as many subjects as you want - the more you buy the less you pay - all 5 subjects for one month is $170. It hooks you up with a website for some of the work, other is done on your own. The Math is MathUSee - they send the books (which you don't own & must return). There is a teacher you can access, and she grades the work at the end of the month. You can modify the coursework if you want (ie you pick the book you read for LA each month). You are still the boss of your child's work.

They also have another option - a virtual school. You sign up for the year for $3000. There are some other features you get access to. You have to sign in everyday. The student is answerable to the teacher, the teacher to the school and the school to the Ministry of Education. The same as when a child is in public school. I didn't want this - lose all the advantages of homeschooling I think. But you can do it "at home", and it would be flexible, timewise.

Even though your friends are not in Saskatchewan, I think this could be an option. the costs quoted are in Cdn dollars, so it would be cheaper for you in the US.

My dd is 11, she does the work basically all on her own.

forgot the website
www.discover-e.org

There isn't much of an explanation on the website. They just started this fall. Its not a big funded business, its just a couple of women who are teachers/principals, and also have homeschooled for years. We made our decision based on a friend who was already enrolled. WE just signed up for all the subjects for a month, to see what it was like. This month we only took LA and Math, and will do the other stuff on our own.

here's their pricing page: http://www.k12.com/schooling_program...nsumer_direct/

i don't know how to read it though ...kinda confusing to me (i'm not sure if the monthly price includes everything or only some things??).

'moving beyond the page' is excellent! the only thing is, they are very expensive!!! honestly, we won't use them again due to their prices.

k12 and similar don't appeal to me much. Right now we are using:

wizardspell.com for spelling (both my 1st and 4th grader)
clicknkids.com for phonics (for my 1st grader)
And basic workbooks for math. Although http://www.aaastudy.com/ and http://www.mathmammoth.com/ were both recently recommended to me. I haven't looked into them yet though. If your friend is leaning toward unschooling, I vote they stick with that.
