Our birth story:
We went in to see our midwife on Thursday for my weekly checkup and she said that if we wanted, she thought that everything looked favorable for success for labor to start by stripping the membranes. We decided to give it a shot--our families were on their way in the next 2 days and we were really hoping to get things going by the time they got here. So, the next morning at 8:30 we went back and she stripped the membranes. It hurt, but not as bad as I was expecting. She sent us home with instructions for me to walk around as much as possible and come back by noon.

Lucas and I drove home, then after cleaning the house a bit, drove to Target to get a few last minute things. By this time it was 10:30 and I started having Lucas time the contractions that had started in the car--about 5 minutes apart. By the time we got home from Target, they had moved to 2 minutes apart and were lasting 60 seconds. We called our midwife back and she said that if I felt okay, it was best to stay home a little longer until they became more intense. We waited until 1:30, then drove over to the birth center. When we got there, contractions were every minute and a half for 60 seconds. Our midwife and her apprentice were the only people at the center. So, we had a nice, quiet environment for the labor But, when our midwife checked, I was only 4 cm. Very disappointing! She said I should try walking around or getting in the birth tub for a couple hours and she would check me again at that point. If nothing progressed further, she was going to send me back home to labor there. Well, there was no way I was getting back in a car to go home, so by the end of the 2 hours I somehow managed to get to 6 cm. Our midwife said there was no way I was going home now without a baby!

She had me and Lucas do some laps around the birth center at this point. This became pretty hard as the contractions were now almost nonstop, so I asked to get back in the birth tub. I stayed there for a really long time (Lucas says maybe 2 hours) and labor became hard and constant. The water helped at first, but then began to either stall things or tire me out--our midwife checked me and I was at 8 cm, but wasn't moving any further. She thought if we broke my bag of waters, things would pick back up. At this point, I was in too much pain to really care what she did , so said it was fine. I didn't even notice her do it! As soon as she did, she suggested I get out of the tub because she felt the water was really tiring me out. I really didn't want to, but was so glad I did. I think because I was in the tub for so long, it had begun to stall things because as soon as I got on the bed, things really began to get intense! Lucas laid next to me and helped me get through the constant contracting. They were starting to hurt my back. After about an hour, I was ready to push. I never imagined giving birth on the bed, but it turned out it was for the best. In all, I pushed for 45 minutes. The head came out, and then things got a little frantic. I was unaware of it at the time, which was good! Lincoln was stuck with a combo of shoulder distocia and occult cord prolapse (it was resting on the shoulder) and couldn't turn to come out. Lucas says at this point the head started turning deep purple and he was sure something bad was going to happen. I was oblivious to all of this, only noticing that Lucas was crying a little (which I thought were just happy tears). Our midwife told me she needed me to roll over on my hands and knees right away, so I did and after one push (and some help from her, Lincoln was born! He was very, very purple and not breathing right away, and at this point I began to think something was wrong because Lucas hadn't said anything at all. So I turned around and saw Lincoln laying on the bed with the midwife and apprentice working on him and then he took his first breath! It was amazing. I looked back at Lucas, who was crying, and told him it was a boy. He had been too scared to look. As soon as Lincoln was breathing on his own, the midwife handed him to me and Lucas and I got to meet our son. :

Lincoln was perfectly fine after that initial scare. I had some major tearing because of the way he was twisting around in there trying to get his shoulder out. Our midwife said I had the worst tearing she had seen since opening her birth center. Not a good record to be setting!! So, while I got sewn up, Lucas got some good bonding time with Lincoln. His parents had driven down from Dallas and got to the birth center about 2 hours after Lincoln was born. They brought us some food and met the baby, then headed to a hotel for the night. Lucas and I stayed at the birth center until about 2:15 am and then drove home, exhausted and amazed at our new baby!
