Hi everyone,

anyone have any ideas for me getting my almost 6 year old interested in trying new foods? Has a few favorites, reluctant, to try anything new.
Its a little scary.

Hi!

Welcome to MDC.

You might want to post this question in the Children's Forum or even Nutrition. Some of the more experienced mamas who know a thing or two about getting kids to try new foods, post in those forums.

Is it possible for him to help you shop at the grocery store and help you cook afterwards?

How about growing some of your own vegetables either in containers or in the ground? When he sees how a seed grows into something edible perhaps he might be more willing to eat it. If not, you could visit a farm or a farmer's market, get him to talk to the folks who sell things there. Would that spark his interest?

Another thing you could do is to hide the food. Some don't like to do that but I'm of the mind if it makes the child get more nutrition what's the harm? . Chop mushrooms, grate zucchini or add a few minced onions to their favorite spaghetti sauce. You can put grated carrots into cupcakes. Meatballs can hide finely grated vegetables.

A age 6 I would think hiding food is probably your best bet in addition to offering new foods repeatedly and if your LO doesn't like it then try not to declare as a dislike, just say ok, maybe another day and try again. I think repeat exposure it the key. Also modeling, you will have to eat the foods too.

Good luck, there are forums here just for these type of topics too.
