Polio makes a comeback?

I was told this yesterday.

The last I heard anything in the media was in 2005(4?) when there were just over 1000 cases in Africa.

As far as in the states, in the 50s over 3000 people died from 60,000 cases nation wide.

I didn't mention this but is it not also true that more people in the US get polio from the vax then from the "wild"

Is this correct? Its what I remember from readings and such.

Where is polio making a comeback? Here in America? The last case of wild polio in the us was 1979. All but 8 cases since then have been caused by the oral polio vax. Those 8 other cases were imported.

Paul Offit himself wrote a book about one such case The Cutter Incident about a girl in California who got polio from the vaccine. Her brother got the vaccine the same day and was not affected.

Anne Elizabeth Gottsdanker is in her fifties now and in a wheelchair. She teaches, I believe, at Antelop Valley College. This was the case that made Melvin Belli famous and product liability law a discipline.

If you read the book, you know that she was not the only person. Having lived through that era, this kind of news did not get much press.

I challenged someone on another (mainstream) board who claimed polio was making a comeback. She ended up posting some info about polio in Namibia in defense.

Yes, there is still some polio is some parts of the world. But India still has the plague... and that isn't keeping me up at night either.
