Storing knitting needles?

Thread Starter
My knitting needles are all over the place and I'd like to get them sorted and stored properly so they don't get damaged... right now I have them in various cloth bags and (kind of) sorted according to dpns, circular, crochet hooks, etc. I also have one of those fabric storage things for my long straight needles, but they are always falling out of it (a couple of pairs are longer than the flap that is supposed to keep them in place).

I'm thinking that there must be a better way to keep the needles both sorted and in one place... what do you all do with your needles?

Thx!

straights go in a decorated coffee can
dpn's in a second coffee can with rubber bands to keep them together.
circs go in here

I never use my straights, so they sit in my yarn drawer under everything else. I keep my circs in their original packages in a big ziplock bag, roughly in size order. I have an Excel worksheet listing all of my needles, so I can find out if I have something without digging it all out. Cheap and not fancy, but it works for me.

I keep mine in a funky vase I got at a yard sale.

I keep mine in a vintage enamel pot with a handle with a big red chunky wood knob !

I have a large 3-ring binder and put in several page protectors with the opening at the top. Each protector holds a needle size. It's really handy to have all my 7's together, for example, whether I need straights of various lengths or circs of various lengths or dpns, etc.

I made a knitting needle roll up case out of recycled fabric- http://multicrafty.blogspot.com/2007...-tutorial.html

It was really easy. I'll try to post a pic of mine tomorrow.

I use a photo album for my circulars--similar concept. Each picture pocket holds a needle.

I also sewed a knitting roll which I use for my double pointed needles.

I don't use straights a lot either so they're just stuck in the bottom of one of my yarn tote drawers. I really should at least put a rubber band around them.

i knitted myself a storage zippered pouch using circular needles and double strand of the thickest yarn I found/liked so that the pointed ends don't go through.

I just calculated how wide I wanted it by putting it over the bunch of knitting needles and adding about an inch (that's the width), it's about 4 inches high.

cant' remember if I fastened the bottom part using a crochet hook and whool or needle and thread. but I remember spending time sewing the zipper... it took time but I'm very happy with my totally customised storage solution !

+ made another pouch later on for my crochet supplies, just knitting a rectangle that time which I folded in two before stitching the sides + sewing the zipper on the top section.

I have a fabric knitting needle case...I bought it off of eBay from a woman who makes them. I don't have a ton of needles and they're mostly all straight so it works great. There's also room for scissor, a case of sewing needles, etc. It looks essentially like the one posted in the tutorial except it is a tri-fold instead of roll.
