Seventh Generation Diapers

We CD our almost-5-month DS, but for our trip this week to the in-laws (an 11 hour drive away) we are planning to use sposies. We have leftover Seventh Generation sposies from when DS was really little and our cloth diapers were on backorder. They say they are for up to 18 lbs. DS is about 16 lbs or a little less right now.

We have DS in one right now, to see how it goes (how long it lasts, leakage issues). Compared to our cloth diapers, they just seem so insignificant...so thin, of course, and we're not sure if they're too small (the front of his hips are covered by the elastic tabbies, but not by the material in the front of the diaper, if that makes sense). It seems like if he has a moderate to big poop, it'll be a total leakage situation.

I am more comfortable with Seventh Gen than with more mainstream, less "green" brands, but I'm wondering if the more mainstream brands will offer coverage more comparable to what we get with our cloth diapers.

Anyone with Seventh Gen experience??

Well, my Addie is in them right now b/c she outgrew her prefolds in literally 2 days and we haven't been able to get new ones yet. They contain pee really well and I've got a super soaker, but she hasn't had a major poop in them so can't speak to that. And she's in a size that fits her without at doubt...

Good luck!

I ordered a free sample once - he was in it for about 20 minutes before he pooped and it went EVERYWHERE! I find the leg elastic very thin compared to the mainstream brands. I wish they would make the elastic more substantial, then I think they'd be great.

The mainstream diapers also have plenty of different sizes, so you can definitely get the coverage you need.

The mainstream brands would hold more but do recall that the mainstream diapers may contain chemicals that your child hasn't been exposed to, you don't know how they would react.

I would stick with seventh generation.

We used them once when we stayed at a hotel and couldn't do laundry. They worked fine. It was weird getting used to how small they were though, so I know what you mean.

I've found that those recomended sizes aren't always accurate- so much depends on how your baby is built. My tall, skinny baby needed to "size up" before reaching the recomended weight because she needed the longer rise before her waist and hips ever filled out one size. My pudgier babies had the opposite problem- they needed to size up for more width, before they ever filled in the length.

So, IME, we often needed bigger diapers than what the package recomended. I'd guess that if you had a baby built EXACTLY like the ones the diapers were built for, they'd make it to the weight on the package, but if your baby is built differently (like most are) then you'll outgrow the diapers in one direction or another at a lower weight.

Go ahead and use up the old diapers you found during your trip, in the middle of the day, when he's unlikely to poop (if you can predict that.) But when you go to the store for a new package, buy a size bigger.

We CD except when we're visiting somewhere for more than a day or so.
We had bad luck with them with DS: leaks everywhere! Same thing with Tushies and the other "eco" brands...we wound up getting Pampers b/c they were the only ones that worked. It sucked having pee/poo all over sheets, jammies, us...

I did not care for them although I managed to use up the remainder of a package by putting his cloth diaper covers on over them. Otherwise we had some awful leakage.
I do really like the Earth's Best diapers, I've only been able to find them at BRU or TRU and never tried them with EBF poo (DS is in the semi-solid poo stage) but they hold pee REALLY well.

Seventh Gen may be unbleached, but they still have gel. And I never had one NOT leak, breastfed poo or just urine.

We've been happy with Tushies while camping. They are gel-free and actually appear a bit greener than Seventh Gen. And we've also used WFM's house line (365), which does have gel.

I hated the 7th Gen diapers. They always leaked no matter what.

Well, I think after reading these replies, as well as comments on amazon.com, we've decided to bite the bullet and lug our whole supply of cloth diapers with us. Our car is not that big, so we're trying to figure out how to fit all the things we feel we "need." Hopefully, MIL & FIL won't mind us washing poopy diapers in their machine.

Dealing with leaking for 5 days, including two days spent in the car, just does not sound like fun.

we have always alternated with seventh gen and cloth since dd was a baby...she's 2.5 now and the only complaint I have is the new tabs...but I think they only changed the tabs on the bigger size diapers...we've never had leakage problem...
fyi...dd has always been long/tall and skinny...I've heard people with more rotund babes say they have issues with them and proper fit!

IME seventh generation leaked all the time. I wanted to like them, I really did but I just couldn't use them more then once.
Moltex Oko worked well for us if you can find them.

We just switched to 7th gen and love them. No pee leaks, no gel oozing out, and no irritation. They are sized smaller than other brands, and we have had two poo leaks (but in all fairness, Nora stores up a week's worth of poo and lets it all go at once - nothing would hold that volume!). I'm sold on 7th gen since we don't cd.

We do it all of the time. It's really not that bad. We're driving 12 hours on Tuesday and we'll just pack the diaper bag full and put clean dipes in one wet liner and dirties in another. It's really pretty easy if you can do laundry at your destination.

I've used 7th generation as nighttime dipes and traveling dipes for years. Never had leakage issues, but I do buy a size up from what they recommend. I tried tushies but they leaked terribly.

We use 7th Gen. as back up diapers when I can't get DS to cooperate (he's in a diaper hating stage right now)

I have two daycare kids in traditional sposies and they are all the same, the 7th Gen are just a different colour.
