Help, brand new to all of this.

I can't sew to save my life, but my mothers MIL wants to make my baby cloth diapers. I have never used cloth before, so this is a new experience for all of us. I don't know where to look or what to look for. Basically, I need the "idiots guide to cloth diapers". I also need to find patterns and give her the run down on what she needs to make. Of course, the cheaper the better, but I do realize that any of it is cheaper then disposible. I am not due for another 25 weeks or so, BUT, she needs as much time as possible. Also, this will be my 6th bio child and I haven't had one baby bigger then 7 lbs 11 ozs at birth, so I doubt that i will have a large baby (smallest being 6 lbs 10 oz).

So what are the pros and cons of all types? I have a front loader washer and dryer and I don't pay for water or electricty, so I am not afraid of even daily washing if need be.

So the question is, what do I need, where do I find it, pros and cons of different types of diapers.

Thanks SO much.

I'd say the best place for you to go is http://diaperdivas.proboards57.com It's the diaper sewing divas and a great group of women. I'm Gaia's Bliss over there, there is a *ton* of information there as well as links to free patterns, bought patterns, co-ops, fabric stores, anything you could think of.

Just to get your started though,
Fabric: www.kidsinthegarden.com
patterns, a lot of people love Rita's Rump Pocket, I've never made one, but I hear great things about them: http://handmadebyrita.blogspot.com/2...t-pattern.html
Basic Info on cloth diapers: http://www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com/basics.htm

Hope that helps you get started, don't let the information overwhelm you, just keep reading and it eventually makes sense!

There are quite a few types of dipes and I like them all for different reasons. My suggestion would be to read up on all of them, and try a few different kinds.

I like prefolds for a nb because they poop so much. Fitteds with a cover are nice though, because there's a double elastic barrier to keep poop in!

I like pocket diapers for their ease of use, especially for daddy or sitters, but they can be a pain for washing (occasionally people get repelling or stink problems if you use the wrong detergent).

Not everyone has this issues, and there is almost always a solution, but I just want to warn you up front...

There's lots of types of covers, too, if you're using a fitted or prefold. A PUL cover is nice because it's thin. That's the same stuff you'll use if you make pocket dipes. Wool is great because it holds a lot of pee but not stink and is a natural fiber, more breathable... I like my windpro fleece cover, too, fits well and holds everything in.

There's so many choices!

I really love my cloth diapers. Would never go back. I hope you love them, too! I got some patterns of zanyzebra. You could try there.

i second kiansmomma. diaper sewing divas is definitely the best site for how to instructions and pics. you can also ask just about any question and an experienced sewer will help you out.

as for patterns, rita's rump pocket is the easiest by far. i just started sewing 1 month ago and the first thing i made was a rrp with flannel. it's still working! : since then, i've started making fleece covers and flannel prefolds. it does get easier! and what you've heard is true....it does get addictive!

We are all in one fans in this house. We use all in ones and fitted diapers with knit longies. Just curious - how old is the woman sewing these? If she's your MILs mother. Just wondering about preparing and cutting all of that fabric.
