Ped appt coming up...

...and the last time we went, the ped said he needed to see "how far it goes back"... it didnt hurt Ry at all, but I wasnt exactly cool with it. Im not very outspoken, and my dh teased me because i LUNGED at the doctor when I thought he was going to retract him..

So, advice? He does not need to look inside, right? I was so angry at myself for a long time after that appointment, that we havent been back since, and that was 6 months ago.

omg NO! tell them NO they cannot do that, why do they need to look under it? print them a pamphlet and give it to them! http://www.nocirc.org/publish/4pam.pdf

No, the pedi doesn't need to retract at all, not even a little.
Simply do not remove the diaper at the checkup. If the Dr. tries, say "no thank you, we're skipping that part today". If he asks why, state because he retracted your son last time and that goes against AAP guidelines and your son isn't having any penile issues, so looking inside his diaper is useless.

thanks so much... i thought i was right, but then I wasnt sure. I dont know anyone irl who is intact, so theres no one to ask!

I tried to explain my concern to dh as that had Ry been a female, a doctor would not be looking inside her vagina, so why would he look inside Ry's penis?

Before the examine even begins say to the doctor:

"After all the reading I have done about potential problems with forcible retraction, I would be very uncomfortable with you touching my son's foreskin at all - he is not having any problems, and I don't want any created. I realize it may be your standard practice to check retraction, but I respectfully request that you not do this to my son. According to the AAP, his foreskin may not retract until the end of puberty, and this is perfectly normal. I appreciate you respecting my wishes."

What he did WAS retraction and he should not do it again. Before the diaper comes off you can say "after last time when you pushed his foreskin back I was so uncomfortable with it I went home and did more research and found that what you did was unneeded and potentially very harmful so please do not even touch his penis this time"

I know it is hard I am not good with confrontation and my heart feels as though it will pump out of my chest and I turn brick red. But I had to remove a dr's hand in the past from my ds and even though it was hard for me the damage to my ds would have been much worse than me being temporarily uncomfortable.

Wow, that's a perfect speech, but too long for me to remember in the moment. I always say, "My son's penis is intact and not yet retractable. I would request that you not manipulate it in any way." I can actually remember that!

yes, it is long to verbally remember, but parents could always type it up ahead of time and ask that it be put in the boy's medical chart, alone with a copy of the AAP foreskin guidelines.

Thanks for the update! I am glad things went well.

I just had our son at our very crunchy family practitioners office for a check up (since I had our 2 yr old there for a listen to her chest due to a rough cough). Wew undressed him to weigh him and I was ready to give the "don't touch the penis" speil but she never touched his penis. I knew she was foreskin friendly but I was on guard anyway. It's unfortunate we have to be so alert and protective when in the care of medical staff.
