Schedule for vaxing for school entry?

Yes, I live in one of those states that only has a medical exemption and for various reasons we may not be able to homeschool this coming school year. I have an 11 yr old who was partially vaxed as a baby and children (8 and under) who have had no vax. Has anyone done a delayed/alternative schedule that only includes the vax for school entry? Is it better to just give one vaccine one a month or give 4 at a time? Also, what happens if my child doesn't have all of the recommended doses when school starts but it's too soon for another dose? Will they deny entrance?

I really HATE THIS! I never wanted to vaccinate my children but I don't have a lot of options right now.

What exactly are the state requirements? From there we could help think up a schedule that works for you. some things I immediately think of:

-most schools allow a test for chicken pox immunity instead of the vaccine; even if your kids haven't had the disease, check anyway because they might be immune

-most states don't require every piece of the M-M-R to have the same number of doses (so here I htink we need two measles but only one mumps, so you could go for the single vaccines if that is something you are interested in--though there are supply issues there I think- see thread in selective area)

-some vaccines require less doses the later you give them

Most school districts also have a policy about how they handle missing doses, what the grace period is, etc.

You could always get a religous or philisophical exemption and opt out of the vaccine registry. Then you wouldn't have to worry about it.

west virginia and mississippi only have medical exemptions which are for each individual vax and must be renewed every year or so. i know from personal experiance that being allergic to eggs or other components of the vaxes isn't a good enough reason to be granted an exemption.

sorry, op. like the pp said, i would look up the specific state requirements and find out your districts policy on grace periods for kids who are being caught up. then i'd try to make a schedule.

Thanks. I have done some searching on the internet for grace periods, etc. but nothing is coming up. I may have to just make some phone calls.

I reread the post and realized after posting a dumb answer you are in a state without those options... which sucks!!!!

Have you researched to see if there are any doctors in that state who are against vaccination... they do exist, you just have to search... perhaps try find your tribe... its possible someone there would know someone?

Move. Or use an out of state address. Your children's health is at stake.

Yeah, easier said than done! I already feel bad enough about all of this. Moving is not an option. I don't understand the out of state part.

Look on your states dept of edcuation website. I know for MO the requirements for school entry is less then the recommended AAP schedule that the doctor's office uses. I personally would do 1 shot at at time with at least a month between shots.

MS school vax requirements.

WV school vax requirements.

It looks like you can get titers checked for MMR and have a doctor's note the your child has already had CP. I would check the titers before I would get the MMR vax.

For MS, I think that each district might have individual policies about what to do for a child who was "catching up." That might not be on a web site. You probably need to talk to someone at the district office.

If you are in Mississippi I thought you might find this interesting... If you can get a Chiro. to sign med. exemptions for your children and see what happens with the laws that may change... I would vote for that... Finding your tribe has a lot to offer State by State.

I would look further into how to get out of giving or getting them. Too many risks involved imo.

:

Our state used to have a medical exemption and there are a few docs who would write it up for anyone.

Do you have school alternatives besides public? Maybe an online school or montessori? I hate to see a homeschooler have to give it up. Are there alternatives?

I know this probably doesn't help you but these two states' laws are NOT constitutional! I'd call the ACLU. Grrrr.

Just wanted to add to my comment and suggest that you look for organic/eco friendly baby boutiques in your area. The people working there should be able to recommend non-vax friendly docs to write an exemption for you.

I seriously, seriously doubt there are any drs that would write medical exemptions.. they could get in a lot of trouble. It is very difficult to find a dr in this area that is anti-vax. Believe me, I have looked before. This area is VERY mainstream.

I am looking into other options and there is one that looks promising (another mom that homeschools) but it would be expensive.

I was just looking for other people that may have vaxed only for school entry and what kind of schedules they used.

I wish there were something like that around here--if you lived here you would understand why I chuckled at the possiblity of there being an organic/eco friendly store in this town. VERY mainstream.

You certainly don't have to do all the vaccines. Find out from the school which ones are required at this time of age.

The doc doesn't know. He'll sell you all of them.

Also post in the tribal area.
