funny story and some questions

I had an appt. with my nurse practitioner today and we ended up talking about vaccines. Apparently when I first started seeing her I told her that my DS wasn't getting any vaccines yet but maybe when he's older. So, at MY appt., she brought out her ctach up schedule and showed me all the vaccines she wan'ts to give Owen at his 12 month appt. The schedule recommened almost all the vaccines in one day but she said she would do less.

So we ended up talking vaccines and these are some of the finer points:
-I was telling her how more people will be getting chicken pox now because of the vaccine and she told me that I was wrong and we would actually be seeing LESS shingles and that I didn't understand because I had never seen anyone die of chicken pox. As if she has! lol

-apparently polio is running rampant is Toronto because of all the immigration. I asked her how severe the cases were there and she said all the people who caught it were now crippled. Right here in Toronto. Did I miss something? I hadn't heard about this?

-Owen is at very high risk of catching tetanus from LICKING stuff

-the fact that Owen is not vaccinated makes the chances of a cold or fever turning into an ear infection much higher

Ugh. She actually is a really great NP most of the time. And we didn't argue. It was really friendly. She told me she wouldn't be able to sleep at night if she felt she hadn't explained things to me properly. And I told her that I honestly thought she had Owen's best interests at heart, which I really think she does.

There are no new cases of polio right?

Apparently the polio has been going on for awhile because they told me the nurse told me the same thing 7months ago.

Sorry, but for lack of a more eloquent response ......YOUR NP IS FULL OF CRAP!!!

Just the same ole scare tactics intended to misinform people and terrorize them with statistics and false information.

How could they see "less shingles"?? First, there hasn't been a CP vaccine out long enough to full understand the affects on shingles. Shingles usually occur to older populations. How could she possible forecast what will happen to those kids getting the vax now for the future of say, um, sixty years?? Besides, shingles are an autoimmune response from a body that has already experienced chicken pox and/or the virus:

Hmmm.....well, being a CBC and CTV national news junkie myself I think I would have heard of this if it happened. I mean, come on, have you seen the drug commercials during those programs??? Besides, if you go to the WHO website there are NO incidence reported in Canada this year or last. I didn't look back further but my assumption is there are none then either.

Well, this comment of shear stupidity doesn't even warrant my time.

In my personal experience, being a daycare provider with ALL vaxed daycare children and UNVAXED kids of my own I can tell you that the opposite is true. No, I don't have any "proof". Only antecdotal evidence. But, my kids rarely get sick even when around the always sick daycare kids. Neither of my kids has EVER had an ear infection.

Grrr.....so much for INFORMED consent.:::

The ignorance of the medical community when it comes to vaccines never ceases to amaze me!!!

I guess she won't sleep well at all because she did everything BUT inform you properly!!

Wow considering that less than 1% of people that actually catch polio end up crippled it's amazing this is all happening in your town with nobody hearing about it!

I know you said she's well-meaning and nice and all, but I don't know I could entrust my care and that of my child's to somebody that cluless!!

I thought you guys here would like whatshe had to say! There was more stuff too but I just can't quite remember all of it. It is amazing what we have to deal with from our doctors. She actualy had me questioning the polio thing though because someone else had mentioned to me that they heard about someone around here who had it. All bs clearly!

I wish I had any choice in the matter of who we see DS and I are just very very lucky to have a health care provider at all with all the shortages. DH doesn't have anyone But, this is the reason that i make sure I am very informed before I take any of her advice. Something everyone should do but unfortunately most don't. I have heard rumours about a girl from my home town who is about to graduate med school and take patients here. She doesn't vaccinate her kids at all so i'm very hopeful about her taking me on! Wouldn't that be nice!

In the US since 1979 there have only been 8 cases of imported polio. I imagine Canadas is pretty much the same. toranto.ca says its been eliminated in Canada. So I think if there was an outbreak there you would def know! I don't understand where all this "polio is on the comeback" and "polio is on the rise" crap is coming from. You are like the 3rd person in as many mos to mention this. Is this the latest fear tactic in dr circles? I don't get it.
