Add Nigeria to the list of countries that have banned circumcision:

But world acclaimed Ifa priest and Awise of Osogbo, Chief Yemi Elebuibon, disagrees with the opponents of circumcision and facial marks. He said, ...“The whites still hold on to their tradition and culture.”
Every time another country bans male circ, or puts up further restriction, the more international pressure builds up against the US for its "traditions".

While the article is encouraging, we have to be careful about what we claim. It only mentioned that basically a bill is under consideration to ban ritual scaring and circumcision in one Nigerian state. It doesn't seem to have passed yet and isn't involving the whole country yet. It's a good start to be sure but lets just try and be as accurate as we can.

Can anyone give me more info on countries banning circ? I was aware that several were considering putting limitations, but these hadn't been passed or there were huge loopholes in them.

I know South Africa has verifiable ban the procedure in boys under 16 but there are cultural and religious loop holes. It was in July 2007 and you can read a new piece here: http://www.mgmbill.org/news.htm Part of the 'Children's Act'

It is rumored that Vietnam has ban circumcision but I have yet to see source or third party verification of this. If anyone has an article or news piece please post it to clear this up.

Denmark is considering debating a bill to ban circumcision and the children's commissioner in Tasmania Australia is having a review done as a first step toward legislation. The review is expected by the end of the year. I know that Finland considers it of and on but no solid action has occurred yet though their children's advocacy group would like to see a cessation of circumcision in the long term. Currently it is only practiced among certain minorities anyway.

Yeah. That's what I was going to say.

Frankly, I'm stunned because the vast majority of Nigerians are very pro-circ so I don't know how this even became a bill in that country.
