Ped wants me to sign waiver.

Hi,
I am in Illinois and my baby is on medicare. We've been searching for a doctor in our area who would not be opposed to our non-vax decision for almost a year. Now, I finally found one ped whose staff told me that he won't have a problem but I will have to sign a waiver.
Is it usual?
Should I sign it?
Would it pose any problems in the future if I sign?
How should it be worded and what to be aware of?

Thanks all!

Sounds like the AAP's Non Vax Compliant waiver- basically says that YOU are aware that by not vaccinating that YOU are responsible for your child's illness and potential death. It's a CYA (cover your a**) for the doc's. If you are having a Seriously hard time finding a doc, and this is your only option I would sign it- after reading it, of course.

I lived in Salem Oregon for a while and the only doc's that would see my kiddo's required a waiver. In fact I also had them put in writing that they would continue to treat my child regardless of their vax status- we had an issue with one doc. She tried to 'fire' us (after the signed waiver) because, as she put it "we were negligent parents" and she would not treat such people. Well, the other doc's in her practice threw a holy coniption fit over her comments. I was guarenteed that they would see my kiddo''s- and that their vax status was fine since I had signed their waiver.

Lots of people don't like the wiaver- if I were you ask the front office people to send you the waiver so you can read it and sign it at home- before your appointment. That way you can really think about weather or not you agree to what you are signing.

Happy Holidays!!!

Here is a waiver you can print out and sign. It is basically the one most docs have for you to sign sans the nasty, self-incriminating stuff -

I would take that one in (signed) and that's it.

We signed the waiver the first time we were asked (more like "told") to, but the next time I read it more carefully and simply crossed out the parts I didn't agree with (that included wording that I was endangering my child, etc.) and initialed next to the line. The nurse was like "um I don't think you can do that" and I said "well I can't sign something I don't agree with" and she asked the Dr, then came back & said it was fine.

You can find a copy of the standard AAP waiver on the AAP site to read it beforehand. And it's clearly stated that it can and should be modified to meet peoples' needs (it also says that one of the purposes of the form is to sway parents who are undecided), so the doctor really shouldn't have a problem with you crossing out the problematic line.

Are there any family practice docs around who take Medicare? In general FPs are more okay with alterations to the standard vaccination schedule.

Our ped asked us to sign a waiver with our first dd when she was 12 months old (though we never vaxed at all). I did not sign it however I did print them out something with all the possible negative side effects that vaccines can cause and left it on the desk with the un-signed form. They never asked me to sign anything again and they still see my kids.

Best of luck to you mama!!

I am opposed to all Refusal to Vaccinate forms. I think that they are nothing but a control/intimidation/coercion measure for doctors, and I will not sign them.

This was a problem for the ped practice, and conflicted with their heavy-handed "office policies"; so we took our family health care business elsewhere, to a family practitioner.
