Come ON people! This is INSPIRING! It is what the rock world should be ABOUT! It is talent, and not some preconceived notion about WHO rockers should BE or WHAT they should LOOK like.. it is depth, emotion, and TALENT.

Remember Simon Cowell always harping on people about image? age? weight? The superficial crap needs to move aside for the real MUSIC.

Awesome job Journey!

Yep. I went to Journey's concert a few months ago. It was pretty good. Would have been better if we had had better seats though....we were in the lawn seats. I have the Revelations CD/DVD and it's good. I like the re-make stuff better than the new stuff though.

I love the way they found him. It is a very inspiring story!! I still think he is better than Steve Perry but I know a lot of people disagree....I'm sure it has a lot to do with the fact that the "original" Journey wasn't in my generation. I was pretty young when I listened to the original group.

Me too.. Dp grew up with Journey (he is 10 years older than me), but he ALSO thinks Arnel Pineda rocks harder.. but then, he is FA, so he loves a front leading man that speaks his same language..

And well, the fact of the matter is, it sounds like Steve Perry was letting down his fans and band, and that is so not cool.

I watched the vid in your link. and I think he does a great job of fitting in with Journey and keeping Steve Perry's legacy going. It kind of reminds me of what happened with Judas Priest, sort of the basis for the movie Rockstar. I've always liked Steve Perry's voice (and Rob Halford's) and think Arnel Pineda can really sing those Journey songs.

I hope his star keeps rising.

Did you check out the other videos on this thread? I posted a whole bunch, some from his original band from the Philippines (The Zoo), but most from some Journey concerts..

Not only has Pineda kept Journey alive to its original fan base, but he has expanded it... there is HUGE Filipino fan group that was not part of the original fan base that is just making Journey mania all over again!!

I grew up with Journey so watching this other guy singing Journey songs is awkward. It feels very karaoke to me. If I close my eyes though, he sounds great.

And this is basically the reason why I LOVE HIM. He SOUNDS great.. and I think that his "look" is working against him in mainstream music, unfortunately. MOST famous rockers are WHITE and AMERICAN.

The fact that Arnel Pineda rocks hard and DOESN'T fit that oh so too tight in my honest opinion, "image" of rockers gives me HOPE in the universe.

I hope that this opens a door for ever-so-talented rockers specifically and musicians of all types in the broader sense, all around the world, regardless of their appearance, race, ethnicity, nation of origin, religion, sexual preference, etc

Talent is talent. If he "sounds great" then he is.

When Pineda was talking about his experience in the US applying for a work visa, I nearly cried.. no one believed him until he broke into song in the line.. No one believes that a Filipino could ROCK.

It makes me especially sad since I have a niece that is an actor in NY.. she is continually miscast (think back to old Western movies where Italians were cast as NAs..) or NOT cast, and she is very talented.. one of my nephews is an alternative rocker.. he grew his hair out (it is fairly curly from his mom's side), but he still is struggling with his "image problem"

I mean, how many FAMOUS rockers don't fit that image? Few I think. Just Jimi- MAYBE Jerry Garcia? (Even Jimi and Jerry were at least US citizens.. that gives them advantage in this..) Pineda is the only Asian rocker I can remember hearing about.. EVER.

I think he gives this a WHOLE new meaning..

As a Filipino, I'm very happy and proud to see Arnel as the new frontman on Journey.

Not to mention, "Don't Stop Believin" is my go-to karaoke song...though, I could NEVER ever be remotely close to what he can do :P

I see you live in DC..
But maybe you can answer my question(s).

How many FAMOUS rockers have there been that are Asian? (I couldn't think of any).
Were they American?
If no (to either of the first two questions), can you name one famous rocker that was NOT American or British (again, I came up with nadda)?

Salamat!

All this bumping - do you do their advertising or something?

Anyway, I wasn't saying it feels karaoke to me because he's not American and White - I was saying it feels karaoke to me because he sounds so much like the lead singer. So, watching him sing Journey songs and sound so much like Steve Perry gives on the feeling he is lip syncing. I know he's not but, that's the feeling I get.

Other lead singers have been replaced in bands and it's been fine because they bring their own sound and flavor to the band but, Pineda sounds exactly like Steve Perry so it has a very lip sync feel to it for me. I wish he brought his own feel, his own style to Journey instead of sounding exactly the same.

And, it has nothing to do with his race.
