Jerod Xavier O.
12/23/08 9:32pm-born on his due date.
4 1/2 hrs labor
7 lbs 12 oz
20" long
Well we got home Christmas Eve, about 2pm and I needed to feed him and take a small nap as he had me up half the night. Hubby and FIL took the kids and my sister to Fred Meyers to go shopping and let me rest. Christmas Day was spent opening presents and feeding and sleeping when Jerod slept.
Jerod is doing wonderful. He's alert, strong and already nurses pretty well-got a strong suck.
Anyway here's the birth story-with a little bit TMI.
Contractions started on the morning of the 23rd every eight mins for a hour. Then slowed and stopped after I had breakfast. They started up at 5pm again every 8 mins, by the time 6:30 came around they were 5-6 mins apart and getting stronger, that's when I informed hubby that we needed to call mom so she could bring my sister over here to watch the kids with FIL and then come to the hospital to be one of my labor support persons. Hubby decided that because of all the snow and ice-which we had alot for this area- he didn't want to risk driving so we called up mom to see where she was at. My father wasn't home yet and didn't want to help my mom get chains on her car so she had to call up my cousin to get a ride here. So we had to decide either to call a taxi or an ambulance. The taxi would have taken too long but I didn't want to call 911 cause I didn't think it was a true emergency but hubby took the phone and called them anyway-knowing it would be fast as my labors usually are-especially if my water broke. That was about 7:30.
A fire truck ended up coming first, they asked questions and then the ambulance came. I got in and took a boring trip to the hospital with ctx at 4 mins apart. Hubby would meet me after mom dropped off Sis at the house. I got to the hospital and went to the assessment room. They hooked me up to the monitors. The contractions were still 4 mins apart and the nurses were acting like I was going to go home. I knew that I wouldn't be. Hubby and mom showed up then. They checked to see if my water had broke cause I said I was leaking but it ended up being mucous. Then they did an exam but the first nurse said that she couldn't tell what I was at but just soft and squishy. LOL The second nurse was able to check during a contraction and said I was already at 8 cm but 5 cms when contracting. That the bag of waters was bulging and could break at any moment. Then the contractions really picked up. They said I wasn't going home and it was time for a room. They asked if I wanted an IV pain meds and an epidural and I said yes. By then the ctx were really strong and closer together-almost unbearable. They needed to get some blood work from me before they would allow the epidural in. They were too busy doing non-essential stuff that the nurse kept forgetting my number so that she could order the blood work but they came in the labor room at about 9:15 to draw blood.
They transferred me to a room at 9pm and the Dr on call-who ended being the same one that delivered DD2- came to check me out and said that because I was so close to delivering baby that the IV meds would go into Jerod's system and could end up with him not breathing so I swiftly declined the IV meds. The doc checked me and said that he could break my water to make everything go faster otherwise I would have more contractions and be in more pain waiting for my water to break. I agreed to having my water broken so that I could get it over with-never expecting to go drug free and having this fast of labor and not being able to use some coping techniques. By now I knew it was too late for the epidural. I was having contractions really close and really unbearably strong. So the doc broke my water to help it go faster. I was already in the pushing stage anyway and those few mins in the room I had already gotten to 10 cms within a few contractions. He broke my water, some gushed out and then I was pushing the head out. I was so tired, trying to deal with the contractions, I had to be told to breathe cause otherwise I just held my breath. It was so hard dealing with them. I kept having to grab onto anything and moan/yell and I actually would cry during the ctx to help deal with the pain. I thought I was being so loud but later everyone thought that I dealt really well and was actually pretty quiet. Hubby keeps saying that he was so proud of me and being able to deal with no pain meds. Anyway by now I got the ring of fire feeling and was able to push him all out within 3 mins and he was born at 9:32pm. As soon as he was out, I felt great. Hubby said that I perked up as soon as he was out. Oh and when he was coming out the cord was wrapped around his shoulder and the dr just pushed it off and he came out fast.
Then they put him on me and I just held him for awhile. The dr waited until the cord was done pulsating to cut it but hubby didn't want to cut it so mom got the honor of doing it. Then I pushed out the placenta all intact within 5 mins after Jerod was born. The dr checked me for tears but said that the only one was a skid mark that was so small that repairing it would have been worse-that was prob a retear from my last birth considering where it was at. He thought that was pretty good considering how fast he came out. Jerod did have bruising on his head so I allowed them to give him Vit K, but refused the other stuff. They got him weighted and hubby went home to pick up the kids and my sister. They all came in to visit him after I attempted breastfeeding him but he wasn't interested yet. DD1 and DS1 just loved him but DD2 was very apprehensive about him but finally warmed up to him and just loves him to death although she does get her jealous streaks. The family got to hold him and mom took pics and then everyone left for home prob about midnight. He's been nursing and sleeping really well as long as he's near me. We left the hospital around 1:30pm Christmas Eve-just 14 hours after we arrived. Now we are just relaxing and I'm getting to know his routine. All in all it was wonderful birthing experince although fast. AND I finally got to meet my son face to face.
