Milk

I searched, but didn't find any other threads....

I loved it. I came right home and started researching Harvey Milk.

It made me want to be an activist. Seriously. I was so embarrassed when I thought of how I didn't do anything for this election. In 2004, I volunteered and made phone calls and knocked on doors. I have the baby as an excuse, I guess... but I need to do something. The injustices of today are only slightly better than they were 30 years ago.

Anyone else see it? Thoughts?

I really really really really want to see this movie but don't think that will happen til it comes out on DVD. (No babysitter, guests over so can't go see it alone, etc)

I hear you there. I used to see so many movies, pre-baby. Now it's about once a month. Which is still a lot compared to some!

Another thing I really loved about this movie was how real it felt. My favorite thing was part of the scene where Milk was shot. BTW, I'm not giving any spoilers here, even if you didn't know before going in, the movie gives it away in the first 2 minutes.

You know how movies are always about big dramatic scenes between good and bad guys or killers and victims? Yeah, I hate that. It's not real. The bad guy doesn't give a speech before he kills you, he doesn't tell you his reaons. So I liked when they walked into the room together and Milk turns around and, bam, the other guy just starts shooting. No discussion about it. He came there to kill him, and he did. A good movie sets up the reasons ahead of time. Too many obvious statements just seem like weak film making to me.

I did not, however, like the flashback immediately after that. I don't like flashbacks generally. They insult my intelligence as a movie goer. But, eh. No movie is perfect.

I saw it and loved it.

* Made me sad how in many respects so little has changed (better in many ways though).

* Loved seeing the photos at the end - how alike the actors looked to the real people.

* I'll be surprised if Penn doesn't getting an Academy nomination.

* You can listen to Milk's actual recording made in case of his death here:

Excellent movie. Would recommend it highly.

I really, really want to see it. I saw a documentary on Milk several years back that was good.

Amazing movie! We saw in opening weekend at the Castro Theater in SF! It was awesome, to say the least.

I agree, so little has changed.

It's great to hear that this movie has inspired you!

If Penn doesn't win an Oscar, I will be shocked. He TRULY transformed into Milk. James Franco was fabulous, too!!

My only complaint is that this movie didn't come out BEFORE Nov. 4th. I think it might have changed some of the voting that day. It was so sad to watch the same things going on last month around the election (and Prop 8 in CA, specifically) that happened in Milk's time.

Oh, that's so cool! I'm super jealous. I bet that was great.

I haven't had a chance to see it yet, but my sibling and his partner we extras in one scene! Well, I don't think you can acutally see them in the movie, but they were extras! :

This movie was absoluitely beautiful and I have been obsessively reading up on Milk since seeing it. It is so unbearably tragic to think of all he might have accomplished had he had more time.

I finally saw it the other night and I think of all the Oscar-nominated films, I liked this one the most (even Slumdog Millionaire, which I really loved). It was a beautifully told, tragic story and it was incredibly acted.

I can't wait to see it. I probably have to wait for it to come on video too ... if I get 3 hours away from baby, movie is a pretty low priority

but i loved the acceptance speeches for MILK. I can already say without even having seen it that it should probably have won best picture (I did see SM - not impressed at all).

I wonder why it didn't come out before Nov 4 ... part of hte general complacency?
