Chux Pads? X Post from Special Needs Parenting...

I have been using chux pads from the hospital under me daughter when I cath and or do her cone enemas. Well I am almost out. So this got me thinking....

If I can't get my HSA to cover them, what about making them? What type of material would I use that would be absorbent and easily washed? I do have a sewing machine.

Could you tell us what chux pads are? Are they like a mattress pad, sort of, waterproof on one side?

They are liquid absorbant pads. Similar to these:

They also make disposable ones which are usually blue in color. Those are leak proof. Well I should say they hold a certain amount of liquid I need them to go under my daughter when I cath her and when I do her enemas at night.

So I think I am looking for is super abosorbant fabrics. Maybe something like 17 x 20. What fabrics would I use?

My plan was to use hand towels backed with pul. I found it much cheeper to buy the towels than terry fabric. I never got round to it though as we were given some waterproof mattress pads.

Since it sounds like you are going to get through quite a few I would be tempted to make a pull mat with snaps in the corners then just add snaps to the corners of the towels. That way you could just change the towel each time.

I made some pads to go under DD. We have more poop accidents than wet ones, so I just use regular fleece for the waterproof part. If you are expecting more wet accidents, I'd use PUL for the waterproof part.

Anyway, I just used 2 layers of flannel and a layer of fleece. Works just fine.

I used old receiving blankets for the flannel. I made ~7 pads and didn't spend a dime.

We had two double layers of towels under her the other night and it leaked all the way through.

I'm going to pick up some flannel & Fleece and see what else the fabric store has that would work. I just need to make squares out of them.

Hmm, fabric must wash well and frequently.

I do have some receiving blankets I can part with. Not many since I still have an 8 month old.
