Joining new yarn at mitten thumb?

Hi all,

I've knitted this twice now. The first time, I had never done a thumb hole before... I figured it out, but I wasn't exactly sure how to join the new yarn when I started knitting the thumb. I didn't have alot of time to figure it out (xmas) so I just tied it, but then it left an ugly hole and the knot had to be too big for my liking.

I just finished my second pair, this time for myself, but I haven't put the thumb holes in yet. I wanted to come on here first and ask how to properly join the yarn without leaving a hole or a huge knot?

Thanks in advance!

I just printed out the pattern. I was looking for something to make a teenage niece and those look perfect! I'll let you know when I get to the thumb.

When I rejoin for the thumb, I either leave the end loose and weave it in later, or knit the end doubled over with the working yarn for 2-3 stitches, then weave it in a little more when I'm finishing. I never knot anywhere in my knitting. I do sometimes get holes, but not big enough to bother me, and they're where I pick up stitches.

Okay, but weave it into where exactly? I've only ever woven in ends before, where there was an 'end' to weave into...

I think the problem is tying the yarn. When I joined it I just stuck the right needle into the left as to knit a stitch, then looped the new yarn over the right needle and knitted the stitch which leaves a tail. After knitting, I weave in both ends. I got a hole where I picked up the stiches on the sides of the thumb hole, but when I wove in the ends, I was able to cover the holes. I'm still not sure I like it. I knitted it in off-white wool and dss asked me why I was wearing a bandage on my wrist. Still trying to decide if I do number 2 or switch projects.

: When I say "weave it in," I mean take the loose end of the yarn, put it on a tapestry needle, and work it into the knitted fabric. If you don't have an yarn end, what exactly are you trying to do?

ETA: Oh, I see that you're making the Fetching gloves! Do you mean you don't have an actual thumb to weave the end in to? You can just weave it into the mitten below the thumb hole. I tried to make these a couple of times, and it seemed like they were looking way too big. I knit to gauge, so should I just keep going, and they work out?
