I talked to a lactation consultant who told me that some women just aren't able to conceive when nursing, even if it's once a day. I guess (I hope) I'm one of them and it's not something else. The first time I got pregnant we weren't even trying, we just stopped using birth control.

I got my period back the month before DS turned 2 and it's been regular ever since and now I just found out I am pregnant again. My first 2 cycles back were heavier than before but then things went back to the way they always had been... same heaviness/lightness and same # of days in a cycle.

Added: DS is now 39 months and still nursing, though he has cut down to about 4 times a day. Still nursing to sleep and to wake up and a few other random times depending on what we are doing.

It took almost 2 years for my cycle to return and DS was/is still nursing 3-4 times in a 24 hour period. Before that, I thought maybe I'd show up pregnant before a cycle but my body was definitely looking to normalize.
I finally turned up pregnant a few months later; DS is 29 months and I'm 11 weeks along.

It can be tough when you really want something.. especially a baby!
Surely you already have, but just think about how special this next baby will be! And you'll have such a wonderful helper with your son being older. Good luck, it will happen!

I didn't have a period (or even any spotting) until just before DS turned 3. Then my cycles were a little whacked. Skipping some and having really LONG cycles (my norm used to be 26-28 days and it bumped up to 35 or so days) Still not regular. But I am not trying for another.

I got my period back at 4m after DD1 was born, after 6m when DD2 was born (and I was tandem nursing) and 7.5m after DS was born. I voted "other" because I wouldn't catagorize any of those as either "shortly after birth" OR 'around one year."

My cycles never really returned to normal after DD1 was born, as DD2 was conceived a few months later, possibly the first time I ovulated. After the next two were born, I had short luteal phases (the time from ovulation til menstruation- I was charting as birth control) for 2-4 months after my cycles returned. Certainly, my cycles were perfectly normal by 1 year post-partum, except the time I was pg again.

29 months
17 months

In both cases, my period was irregular for about three months and then back on schedule (every 28 or 29 days). I think my period came back sooner for my second son because I night weaned him earlier than I did with my first.

DS1, cycles normalized at about 15 months, got preg with DS2 when DS1 was 22 months old, he CLW at 4.5 years

DS2, cycles normalized at about 18 months, got preg with DS3 when DS2 was 22 months old, I weaned him at 2y, 4 mo

DS3, cycles normalized at about 16 months (pattern here?), got preg with DD when DS3 was 17 months, I weaned at 20 months

DD, nursing currently at 12 months, cycles are back but not normal.

I never tried to get pregnant (never charted to achieve pregnancy or anything, I "tried" in the *ahem* traditional sense), I just let nature take it's course.

11 months with my first
19 months with my second (I was tandem nursing)

5 months with my first
not yet with ds2 -he is 4 1/2 months

With DS1 my period returned 17 months PP

With DS2 my period returned 13 months PP. I think it was hastened because DS2 was in the midst of a brief nursing strick at the time.

While I never I charted (with DS1 I started hormonal birth control and with DS2 my DH had undergone a vas.) My periods seemed regular (more regular than they were pre kid without hormonal birth control) and seemed ovulatory.

update

hi everyone, I just wanted to thank you all for answering and to let you know that we're finally expecting . What worked was CHARTING, actually realizing that I used to have irregular periods before nursing and probably this was the case now as well. So after a 27-day, a 35-day and a 55-day cycle, we made it.
Now I have to find an exciting way to tell dh.
