Fertility treatment question

Hi there--

I hope it's ok to post this here. I thought that there may be women who are pregnant after fertility treatment who may have some good answers to my question.

Clomid isn't working for me. The dr wants to go to injectables, and says that we need to do IUI once ovulation is induced by gonadotrophins and an ultrasound/trigger shot.

Has anyone out there used the injectables? Were you able to use intercourse or is there some reason that you have to do IUI? I'm sure it's more controlled and more profitable for the dr, but I'm wondering if it's absolutely necessary to be effective.

We can't afford IUI and are hoping to find out that it's possible to do the injectables with intercouse vs IUI.

Just curious...

what is your physician's conclusion as to why you are having challenges conceiving? Ovulation problems? Progesterone? Partner's sperm motility? Are you charting your cycles?

Just plain not ovulating! Probably PCOS, given my weight.

Labs, hysterosalpingogram, semen are all normal.

? Has all he given you is Clomid? If so, you may want a second opinoin. I also have fertility issues and would be happy to help you out. I have annovulatory cycles with a uterine deformity.

Hi,

I have used the injectables and they were much more effective at stimulating egg production than just clomid.

The IUI is especially important if you have any cervical issues including a "hostile (chemical) environment" - don't you just love their terms, an abnormal anatomy, or if the sperm doesn't swim well.

If costs are prohibitive, and those concerns aren't your diagnosis, then intercourse is worth a try.

Just something to think about though, the injectable medications per cycle (thousands) cost me much more than the IUI procedure (less than $500), so you might want to consider the best possible long-term cost-effective route with a fertility specialist's advice.

(In case you are wondering, I did 3 cycles with Clomid and IUI - nothing, 1 with injectables and IUI - ectopic pregnancy, and then 1 IVF which resulted in my baby girl!)

I've done 6 cycles of Clomid, 3 with IUI, and 3 additional cycles of IUI with either Gonal-F or Follistim... and am now persuing IVF..

that all being said I know of a number of women who have gotten PG on inectibles alone... altho I think if you can afford it it's best to do the IUIs as well

I did injectables!!!! I too took 3 months of Clomid with the ovulation stimulating injection and the IUI. Nothing. I then did one month of the injection (Humegon.....just like Perganol) with doing an ultrasound to scope out the readiness of ovulation. Then the ovulation injection, then
and IUI. I had what they called "unexplainable infertility" b/c everything about me and my dh was normal to above normal. THe IUI is basically to get closer to the egg. It keeps more sperm alive b/c the are not having to swim through the cervix and the mucus and up the fallop. tubes. The IUI puts them right where they need to be. Giving the
chance of one getting to your egg much greater.

It was not something I had planned on doing when I started ttc....but after 3 years of being unsuccessful I was up for anything! It ended up
giving me my beautiful ds so what can I say? I was so thankful and would do it all again!
