Anyone in Doha, Qatar?

Hi there,

I'm a new mama moving from the states (NYC) moving to Doha, Qatar in Jan 08 - so very soon! I am wondering if any of you live, or have lived there, and could share with me any of your knowledge. I'm mother to DD, who is 5 months old and DH's job is appox a 2 year stint.

Can't give you any advice...how is it there? My best friend's husband just got a job at Qatar University and they are moving there in April. She is very excited and nervous. Her kids are just grown/out of the house, so they are looking at this as a great adventure!

We've been here now over a month and I love it! There are so many expats, decent shopping & grocery markets, and loads of moms & babies/kids. For those interested in knowing...I even breastfeed in public! Never in a million would I have predicted that I could do that in a conservative, Islamic enviroment, but it's really not been an issue. There are others who do as well. I cover my DD up with a blanket, but as long as you are fairly discreet it's not a problem. The Qataris are so family/baby friendly. They love kids & almost all establishments are kid friendly.

Wow the title of this thread got my attention quickly! I lived in Qatar from 1996 to 2000. I was a teenager at the time but if you have any questions let me know! I loved my time there.

This is all very sudden, but my DH is interviewing with a German company in Doha . . . anyone out there living in Qatar or used to live in Qatar? Is it a good place for families? I noticed a side comment on the UAE thread about how there is not much to do in Qatar . . . but a quick check tells me that the ex-pat mom's group has 500 members, there is a Montessori school, and several international schools. There must be a good number of families living in Doha . . . what's the scoop?
