Books to Movies

There are a ton of books being turned into movies....Aside from the most obvious ones (Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia), are there any you are looking forward to? I read Confessions of a Shopaholic earlier this year and REALLY loved it (I laughed out loud reading) so I'm excited to see the movie coming out in February. I've been seeing the trailer everywhere and it just looks so funny! What about everyone else?

Coraline, by Neil Gaiman. I haven't actually read the book, but 14 y.o. dd has, as well as the graphic novel. It's directed by Henry Selick, the same guy who directed the Nightmare Before Christmas (I did not know Tim Burton didn't actually direct it!).

Also I, Lucifer, with Ewan McGregor. Again, I haven't read the book, but it sounds intriguing and the movie, well, has Ewan McGregor in it, so I'll be seeing it.

Dd is really looking forward to Inkheart. It's one of her very favorite books. I hope they don't disappoint her.

Oh, and the Secret of Moonacre, based upon the Little White Horse. It's already premiered elsewhere in the world, but here's hoping it'll come to the US in 2009.

I don't know about any that currently being turned into film, but I sure have three that I want Hollywood to get its hot little hands on:

Bag of Bones by Stephen King
The Alienist by Caleb Carr
and
The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova

I'm so excited that they're making a movie out of Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts, I think is his name. Johnny Depp will be in it.

Of course, the film will probably be missing a lot of depth, but that's to be expected. It was such a great book and made me obsess over India for a little while.

I recommended it to my sister and she finally finished it yesterday. She called me right away and said that she felt immobilized and like there was nowhere she could go from there. She was so sad it was over and she knew she wouldn't be able to find a comparable book. She called me because she said I would know exactly how she felt.

If you haven't read it yet, try to before the movie comes out.

"Atlas Shrugged," although they'll probably ruin it.
"The Time Traveler's Wife" ditto.

I don't have much confidence in the folks who turn my beloved novels into movies; they almost always screw it up.

Me neither. I used to get all excited but now I don't bother seeing half of them.

some friends told me about the "Outlander" series by Diana Gabaldon (time travel, historical fiction, romance) and I'm in book 5 right now. I think book 7 is due this fall, not sure if its the finale or not. Anyway, I heard that "Outlander" is going to be made into a movie and I am very much looking forward to it. I cannot for the life of me think of any actor who could play Jamie Fraser, though IMO they'll have to go with a newbie, but I really like that sometimes

The big problem is that the series is epic (each book is like 1000 pages LOL) and they are going to have to make several movies to cover the story and even that will be leaving tons out. If I could convert the story to movie, I'd start with the 2nd book where

Warning :: Spoiler Ahead! Highlight to read message!
Claire and Brianna are visiting Roger and learning about what really happened to Jaime. To me, that would be a great start, cuz they could have tons of flashbacks, while making the viewer wonder if Claire was crazy or not, until you find out shes not making any of this up!

I'm looking forward to this one too. I love the book, and I think it could translate well into a movie. I like the director, so I'm hopeful

I've always thought "The Time Traveler's Wife" would be a cool movie - I hope they don't screw it up. I did not enjoy the Shopaholic books, but I can see how they would make a cute movie.

I can think of a few movies that ranked right up there with the books: Princess Bride, Rebecca, and Bridget Jones Diary (the whole Colin Firth/Mr. Darcy thing was sooo great.)

I just went to put "Revolutionary Road" on my library queue, but there's a long line for it. There must be lots of other people who want to read it before the movie comes out.
