prayer shawls?

Hello yarn crafting mamas. This is my first post on this forum, as I've just picked up my crocheting again after many years. I am working on practicing my skills, and have been making some scarves for my family. I'd like to make a prayer shawl next, and hold on to it for when there is someone I know who could use it. I love the whole idea behind it, and I know I would be so touched if someone made one for me.

Here is a link about them if the concept is new to you or if you'd like to find out more:

Has anyone ever made these? If so, I'd love to hear how it worked out & see pics if you have any. I am thinking of seeing if there is any interest in my UU church for a prayer shawl group.

I haven't made one yet, but I just recently joined the shawl ministry group at our UU church! I had to get through Christmas. Now, I have to finish the one project I still have OTN, then I am going to start making my first shawl!

I intend to do the Seraphina to use when I am meditating. I think it's lovely.

I googled the Seraphina (the link wasn't working). It is beautiful. Rootzdawta I think it would be lovely for meditating, really helping to set the mood.

One of the ideas mentioned for giving a Prayer Shawl is pregnancy and the birth of a new baby. Oh how I would have loved to snuggle up with my new babes wrapped in a shawl that someone lovingly made.

There are some gorgeous patterns out there. I found a book on the Shawl Ministry website called The Prayer Shawl Companion. I have requested it from my library. I'll let you know how it is once I receive it.

ColoradoMama, would you mind sharing how your UU Shawl Ministry works? I am very interested in starting one up.

So glad to see interest in this topic! I look forward to talking w/you all about this.

Well, it doesn't yet! It's basically JUST started. We have a group on Ravelry. There are just three of us right now. My friend started it a few weeks ago, but that was right in the midst of Christmas. I think we're going to try to get together at the church to crochet/knit together, we just haven't done it yet. I'm hoping that after the new year we'll actually get something going.

I have just about finished my first prayer shawl. So far I'm prety pleased w/it. I am hoping to work in some beading on the ends. I'd love to find some nice beads that say things like "peace", "hope", "love" and then some pretty glass beads. Has anyone ever done this? I'm not sure I'll even be able to find some w/holes big enough to fit on the yarn, but I'm on a mission to find out.
