Anyone else here breastfeeding?

DS will be 3 this Feb. He still nurses to sleep almost 100% of the time (bedtime and nap), and a number of times during the day. I had planned on nursing him for minimum 1 year, so I feel that I have definitely met my goal, lol. I would be very happy if he weaned himself, and don't feel prepared to nurse him + new baby. He is still very attached to "ne-ne", so I will be getting a copy of "how weaning happens" ASAP! I hope that he only needs a bit of a nudge and will cope okay with weaning.

Anyone else out there?

Have you nursed through a pregnancy before, Jenny? I'm curious to know when my milk may dry up.

I have nursed up till seven months pg. My milk never did dry up like many say their's do. I just leaked excessively until the birth. It did change though, to colustrum (sp?).

Although my babies have been about ten months when I got pg. I have never tandem nursed, which is what I am looking at now since my LO is only five months. I am just not looking forward to the pain in nursing my current LO. Usually I end up weaning because it is too uncomfortable, but this time the LO will be too young to do that.

So, I guess I will have to see how it all turns out.

My 11mo old is still nursing. I nursed DS1 for 20 months. I had hoped to make it to 2 yrs this time but I work part/full time and I'm not sure I can tandem nurse and pump. I'm glad I have lots of time to decide if tandem nursing is right for me.

I'm still EPing. My soon-to-be former OB gave me the go-ahead to continue taking Reglan and pumping for now. I don't think it's going to last much longer though, my supply is already lowering.

absolutely. this will be my first time to bf a baby as an IBCLC so I wonder how it will effect the whole nursing experience--will it make me more relaxed or more anal retentive!??. my 1st son had dairy issues and i had oversupply, my 2nd son was tongue tied and it was so painful until it was clipped, so i am hoping for a smooth experience! both self weaned after about 16 mo. so ill likely do the same or try to nurse longer so i can donate a large amount of milk to the milk bank.

as an ibclc, i see that a lot. the consistency and taste of your milk changes too and sometimes that can cause children to refuse the breast. there are many moms that do tandem nurse an older child and infant. here is a great resource on nursing during pregnancy and tandem bfing. i think that must be so special!

I am still nursing my 12 month old but because of preterm labor issues I have to wean by then time I am 24 weeks. Nipple stimulation can cause contractions and I ALWAYS start having contractions at 24 weeks. I am down to nap time and bedtime but she still likes to nurse all night. I am not quite ready to give it up so I am waiting a couple more months before trying to start weaning. We are also in the process of moving her to her own room, which I hate but we just don't have enough room in our bedroom for her and a new baby and us. I have notice that my milk is trying to dry up so I nursed her more last night then I usually do. I am hoping that will help a little bit. She main nurses for comfort now anyways but I just love the bond it gives me with her.

Have you researched Reglan? Not to intrude...I took it when I was pg with my second. After taking it a few months, I did some research (I'd been too sick when I started taking it, and was finally feeling a bit better, though not due to the Reglan).

What I read was that it had been developed as a psychotropic medication, but never gained popularity for that use, due to the fact that it did not cross the blood-brain barrier. Babes in utero do not have a blood brain barrier, so there is no telling what effect it may have. I also read that it is banned for children (anyone under 18) in some countries, though it is used in pregnancy and for infants in our country. And I'm sure you already know that it has a significant rate of depression as a side effect.

I understand that you have to balance the risks of weaning vs. the risks of taking medication. And you may have already found this information. But I wanted to put it out there, jic it was something that would affect your decision. I wished that I had known before I'd taken it.

My LO just turned 3 and is still nursing 1-2 times a day. I began restricting her to that right around her 3rd birthday as my personal feeling is that 3 years is plenty of mama's milk and would like to encourage her toward weaning.

I nursed through most of my second pregnancy and DD1 weaned when I was about 6-7 months. I think my supply dropped drastically around 5 months but many mothers (especially if they're nursing younger babies) notice a dip in supply much earlier than that.

I'm still nursing my 21 month old and I am planning on nursing her thoughout the pregnancy and tandem nursing. I always wanted to tandem nurse. That is of course if she doesn't wean herself but I don't see that happening.

wow! i am not used to moms even knowing what tandem nursing is! mothering.com really puts you in touch with mothers that are so educated! i wish the moms in my community would join!

I was nursing, but DS weaned shortly after he turned two, right about when I got pregnant. I wanted to go longer, but he just stopped asking and I had stopped offering several months ago. It was very gradual, but also natural and child-led.

For the OP, I think a gentle way to start the weaning is to say "yes" every other time and distract with other food, cuddles, toys, etc on the other times. There was an article by Dr. Sears on the "Ask the Experts" section on the main mothering site about this.

Me Too.

I am also nursing my ds who will be three at the end of Jan. I don't really see any signs that he wants to wean and I will not force the issue. I'd *like* him to self-wean before the birth but we'll see!!

He knows that he'll have to "share'' them with the baby.

I am nursing my 18 month old, no clue how long we'll continue- I nursed my first until she was 3, but ds is less attached to his "mmmmm".

I appreciate the link to the info, but I'm not nursing, I pump breastmilk for my daughter

CitizenFong: I've stopped taking Reglan since I posted this. I did some research online and everything I have read said that the effects is unknown and it made me nervous. I don't want to take anything that could harm a growing baby, so I quit taking it.
