I think I have figured out one of my problems...my dreads are too thin. Any ideas on how to get already (mostly) dreaded thin dreads to lock together to make larger dreads?

tie them together and crochet them a little

I'm not quite sure how to crochet, although I have always wanted to learn (on yarn, not hair, lol). Would needling felting work?

Ok I need help. The sides of my hair seem to be locking up just fine but the back is not. Everything I had going back there has fallen out for the most part. I think the problem is that I can't really see back there. My other problem is I hate how everything is laying, kwim? I am seriously considering conditioning and combing it all out and trying again but I hate to waste the progress I have made this week. Ahhhhhh!

Lastly. I have like nooooooo money but I am in dire need of a tam to wear in three weeks when I go to up to visit my family for a week. I have a couple older relatives who would be really horrified and since I only see them a couple times a year I would just like it to be a pleasant visit LOL Anyone know where I can find one dirt cheap? Heck even dirt cheap may not be cheap enough but I will try to come up with some $$ LOL

you can tie any scarf or scrap of fabric around your hair in lieu of a tam

Mine were thin too. A lot of them just ate each other. I'd wake up and realize that two had become one practically overnight. Some of them I wrapped with hemp twine for a month until they joined. A few of them I put the tail of a thin dread into a yarn needle and threaded it down the center of a formed dread.

I would just let it be. It will take off in it's own time. The back of my head was seriously behind the front. I helped it along as much as I could but it just took it's own sweet time.

Yeah I think I will just let it go. I asked my husband how it looked back there and he says it is just really flat but there are some dreads forming.

I went out today with my hair uncovered for the for the first time today. I had on a thin headband and that is all. On a fabulous note my hair does not fly into my face when I drive with the windows open in the van Little things make me so happy!

i have had lots of luck with using a felting needle and stabbing the crud out of mine. works like a charm. you could also try to rub a little powder on them first this will increase the resistance between the strands of hair and get them to lock better.

I was thinking about dyeing a couple of my dreads, but decided that will wait until after my 1 year mark. Instead I am going to wrap a few and add some beads.

Finally got to the beach (which is sad as I live less than 2 miles from the water) and am truly impressed at what the salt water did. I was extra fluffy for a day and then they really came together.

I have also come to the realization that my dreads may just remain curly which is actually quite cool. I have the best of both worlds.

nice indigo curly dreads are gorgeous. and don't worry, i know what you mean about the beach. once we were camping for a couple of months on the beach - my tipi was literally 10 feet from the edge of the sand, and I went more than a week without actually setting foot on the sand! I'm just not really a beach person.

Well here I am aout 20 days in and I am hating the way my baby dreadies look. I have a ton of loose hair and to be honest I think it looks like I just forget to brush my hair instead of looking like I purposefully choose not to brush my hair. KWIM? One side of my head does this weird thing where one dread sticks out like a spider leg. The back just looks like a rat's nest and will not do anything. I have like two baby dreads back there and that is it, the rest is just fuzzy mess.

I guess I just need to give it more time but ughhh!!!

I am so impatient!

Please tell me this will get better and things will look better......

Yes it will get so much better The first several months are a bummer I know. You might try tightening them up a bit with a crochet hook. This is an interesting method.
