Hmph. (update!)

Hi ladies,

I took two HPTs a few days ago, and got faint positives (the first is barely visible, but the second is definitely there, just faint!).

Just got results back from the doctor's office, and it was negative.

Now I'm super confused. I was so convinced I am pregnant! I feel nauseous, exhausted, not much appetite, etc.

I think I'll go get another test and try in the morning. Is it possible to get faint lines, but not be pregnant??

Ask them for a blood test. Otherwise I say a line is a line is a line. Congratulations! :

Erin, I would suspect the blood test at your doctor's was a qualitative, not a quantitative. You could call back and ask. With a qualitative, they only get back a "yes" or "no" from the lab. With a quantitative, your doctor actually gets a value. Different labs have different thresholds for qualitative tests. And different hpt's have different levels of sensitivity to hcg in urine.

So, you could have just enough hcg to trigger a sensitive urine test, but not enough to pass into the "yes" category of a qualitative blood test. Does that make sense?

A line means you are pregnant. False positives are exceeding rare. The only two logical answers are that you were pregnant for a minute, but the hcg is already leaving your system. That seems really unlikely, though, since it's only been a few days since you took the hpts.

I would take another hpt in the morning and maybe call the doctor's office, to boot.

Did they offer you any explanation?

What brand were the hpts?

And most importantly: (((hugs))) Confusion sucks.

Okay, DUH! I read her post and just assumed it was a blood test she took at the doctor's office.

Erin, I am betting you used a more sensitive hpt then the one they used at your doc's office!

Thankyou, Erin and Tracy.

Yes it was a urine test, I should have specified! I think my tests were First Response. They say "5 days sooner".

I had assumed the doctor's test would be much more sensitive than what I could buy in a store!

Still hoping...

I would call about a blood test, too. My OB does blood and urine at the first appointment...just to be doubly sure.

with DS1 I had one "pregnant" result on a Monday. Tues, Wed all tests I took were NEG. Wed am went in for a urine test which was neg at doctors office. I asked for a blood test and found out Friday that I was pregnant. It was such a long week. hugs mama!

ack how emotional and frustrating ! i agree your preg test was probably more sensitive! hope you dont have to wait too long to get a final answer!

This has happened with me too. I had a faint positive, don't even know if my period was late and went into the doc. Their test was neg, so I had to keep going back. They wouldn't do a blood test for me so I just waited a few weeks until my pos was REALLY obvious and went back in. Frustrating! Good luck!!!

Thanks everyone! We haven't tested again, but DP is out for groceries and will pick up a new test. Maybe I'll wait until morning to try it!

It will be nice to know for sure.
