I think I would pass in case someone used it on their garage to melt metals in it, like, say, lead! You can ask for that type of stuff on freecycle and usually get it. And with that you will at least have the knowledge of what it was use for.

My cast iron has been by far my cheapest cookware, and the best! I bought a three piece skillet set for under $30 at kmart, martha stewart brand.

If it's been ground down to shiny metal, then any truly harmful toxins should have been removed, I would think.

What they say about cast iron getting better and better with use is so true. I have a few cast iron cookery items that I love, but I so covet my mother's best iron skillet. At least 60 years old, probably older, since it was passed to her around 1950, that pan literally fed my childhood.

i would not use it - my fil remembers his dad heating lead for making fishing lures in their kitchen with their cast iron pans - you just never know what might have cooked in it!
