As an IGT/severe hypoplasia mom to 3 nursing boys(lasted 6mths with #1, 1yr with #2, and still going with #3) I just wanted to chime in that goat's rue I believe had the biggest impact with me. I also took Domperidone, Shatavari (natural version of Dom), fenugreek, nursing teas, Motherlove supplements, used the SNS with DS #1, hated it, should have tried the lactaid. Anyways I took the goats rue while still pregnant with DS #3, and actually felt my milk come in, got engorged(though I didn't get any bigger, they just got hard), and leaked for the first time:. I did though have to supplement all 3, with luckily at least an organic formula.

My boys all lost too much weight and did not have any poop and mostly dry diapers when I was trying to EBF for the first couple of weeks after birth. It sucked but I know I did everything in my power and beyond to EBF and I would have starved my babies if I continued without formula supplementation. You're doing your best and you have to make yourself and your baby happy and healthy.

Good luck

Thank you, that helps a lot. Def going to try goats rue, maybe dom, thinking about sns again, we will see. Do you supplement with bottles? DD doesn't seem to have any nipple issues, yet. DS never did and we did both bottle and breast for about 3 months, and I gave up after a particularly hungry growth spurt. I know better this time not to give up at that point.

You're welcome, I know how priceless the support is and as a friend says...everything happens for a reason. If I hadn't had to deal with low supply I don't know that I would have found Mothering!!

Anyways yes we used the bottle from the beginning and none of my boys had any problem switching betw. breast and bottle. When they were very young, 6mths and under, I would always start on the breast and finish with the bottle. It also took a couple tries to find a bottle that worked for them.

I know it's time consuming but searching through the threads for low supply issues was a big help to me, lots of great ideas and support out there.

Hang in there, mama! I went through very similar things with my DD. I fully expected to nurse exclusively long term, but she lost over 20% of her body weight her 1st week, regained most with supplementing the following week, lost again in week 3 with less supplementing. Finally I saw a LC (they call her "the breast whisperer") who explained to me about IGT and PCOS being a link to low supply. Like you, I had about a half ounce feeding while I was there. She told me I would probably need to always supplement, but that there were things I could do to increase my supply, including: More Milk Special Blend - it's got all the good milky herbs plus goat's rue which is good for IGT; domperidone - I think someone mentioned you can order it online if you can't get a prescription; metformin - if you do have PCOS, it can help with supply (however, my Dr wouldn't prescribe it); oatmeal. These things definitely increased my supply, but not to the point that I could wean her completely off of formula. I never made more than an ounce every few hours. In fact, the advice my LLL leaders gave about weaning off formula is to do it VERY slowly; like an ounce less per day. The other thing that was really helpful is that I was able to rent a baby scale. That way I could easily keep track of her weight gain to make sure she wasn't falling too far behind.

You might want to check out www.mobimotherhood.org and the MOBI yahoo group: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group...ec=group&slk=3. I found them very helpful when I was trying to build my supply and get some support.

I have heard really different things about LLL leaders in different areas, but if I were you I would totally call them. They can be really helpful and supportive. Good luck!

I did try the SNS also, and I think if I ever have another child I will totally try it again - from the beginning. By the time I tried it with my daughter, I was so stressed out about her weight gain and was so depressed with my inability to feed her that it was just too much added stress to try to make it work long term. My LC had me tape it to the bottom of my nipple instead of the top, which I think makes it a lot easier to have them take it into their mouth.
