VBAC's at Regional??

I talked to my OB about wanting to do a VBAC, and she agreed that I am a good candidate, but then she said she would not do a VBAC at Regional because they are 'out of compliance' with their anesthesiology and OB's are required to remain on site during the entire labor. She said she would be willing to write letters to my insurance to cover a delivery at Providence (my insured preferred provider is Reg).

She said even if I switched to a different provider, it would not be a good idea to do a VBAC at Regional.

Anybody heard this before??

Here are the statistics for each location. Look about the same to me but the latest info is from 2006 so a lot has changed since then.

Oh My God!
Those stats make me want to vomit! They have got to be kidding! 35% c-section rate??? And even the military hospital is terrible! I have to go have a talk with those people at Elmendorf!

Keep in mind that a hospital like Providence gets all the high risk cases throughout the state. So their c-section rate would be higher specifically because of that.

If you don't mind me asking, who is your O.B. and what is her personal VBAC rate?

If Regional being "out of compliance" is a truly a roadblock, then they wouldn't allow VBACs at all. I know of two O.B.s that do VBACs there.

And why is having to stay for your whole labor such a hardship? Is she one of those that shows up just as you crown to catch the baby?

You may be able to find more supportive care for your VBAC.

Currently, my OB is McCreary at Anchorage Women's Clinic. I have an appointment next week to see Mark Richey... not sure if I am going to keep that appointment though if the 'no VBAC's at Regional' is accurate?? I am not worried so much about my OB being MIA during labor, because I am planning on getting a doula.

Is Richey one of the OB's who will do a VBAC at Regional? I really would like to deliver there, I have heard it has nicer accommodations for PP moms.

Dr. Richey's office is at Regional, but he delivers at Providence. He might be the best choice for a hospital VBAC, IDK, but he sure didn't go out of his way to help me avoid surgery after I transferred. He's nice though, not at all pushy, FWIW.

I hate to be blunt but you'll only need those nice accomodations if you have a repeat c-sec and have to stay for 3 plus days!

If you have good support and achieve a nice, uncomplicated, gentle vaginal birth, you will be comfortable and at home before you know it!

What do you think is more important: an extra 50 square feet in your hospital room or having providers and staff that support VBAC? Plus, Providence has wonderful breastfeeding support.

Oh great points! A hospital is a hospital and once you are actually in labor, I doubt the "atmosphere" will make much difference. I have had babies in 5 different hospitals and basically, they were all the same. (except Bassett in Fairbanks had a PP WARD and everyone was in a huge room, that blew!

re: VBAC ban at Regional

National ICAN has just finished re-surveying the entire country to determine which hospitals are banning VBAC. The database is undergoing maintenance but you can see if it is up and running by going to ican-online.org and clicking "VBAC" then going down the left side to "VBAC policy database."

There are several VBAC bans in AK. I'm in another state and so wasn't sure which "Regional" hospital you meant.

You can also find out for sure yourself by calling the charge nurse of L & D and asking her.

If it turns out you have no VBAC options around then please PM me because there is a lawyer who is willing to help such women in AK free of charge.

Still denied. It is not my week I guess. I was also denied access to the Anchorage Freecycle group! LOL

So do I need to pay/upgrade to see more stuff on the ICAN site?

there is no ICAN chapter here in Alaska?
