Let me preface this by saying that I don't have any sons, just 2 daughters. If I do end up having a son I wouldn't want him to be circ'd, though I'm sure it would be a point of contention between my H and I! Anyhow, that's neither here nor there. I babysit a friend of mine's 6 month old. She's a pretty mainstream parent, CIO, circ, etc. She had her son circ'd when he was a few days old. Now, he has skin that looks like foreskin covering the penis again. She retracts it all the time and he has a constant really bad red mark at the base of his penis. Why is his skin covering the penis again? And should I tell her to just leave it alone? She retracts it at every diaper change and puts neosporin on the red area.

You could mention to her what she is doing is causing her ds possible issues down the road with scar tissue but in all probability the Dr. is the one who has told her to do this. One thing I would do is tell her that neosporin is not ment for the genitals and she should switch to bacatracin instead.

I will definitely mention that it could be doing damage...and thanks for the bacatracin rec, I didn't think she should be using neosporin on the genitals either. She rolls her eyes at my 'hippy ways' most of the time but it definitely won't hurt to give her other options. Thanks!

What she is doing is VERY wrong....
Please forward her the following link:http://www.kidsgrowth.com/resources/...il.cfm?id=3420
A recent study in the Journal of Urology followed 254 circumcised boys to see what happened to their penile adhesions. Only seven patients had been treated for adhesions. Despite this, the prevalence of adhesions decreased dramatically with age to:
71% of boys age ‹12 months
28% of boys ages 1-5 years old
8% of boys ages 5-9
2% ages 9-18
We agree with the conclusions of this study. Penile adhesions after circumcision normally resolve without treatment.

I cant believe she is putting Neosporin on his genitals. That made me cringe. Thats like a woman putting neosporin on her clitoris. Please, more then anything else, make sure she stops using product. I think it probably even says on the bottle not for genital use. I know it certainly says not for internal use, and until she had her son's foreskin cut off, his penis head was an internal part of his body.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I mentioned it to her today and she basically just brushed it off and said her doctor told her to do it. I said that a lot of pro-circ doctors don't know how to properly care for it. I don't know how much good it did
