Coconut/Palm Allergy, anyone? Corn allergy?

We're thinking our almost 3 year old has a coconut and palm allergy. Anyone else dealing with this?

He reacted quite clearly to a cookie that had coconut in it right before Christmas. Since then, he has been reacting randomly. Frequently, the only thing in common in the foods is vitamin A palmitate.

If this is what it is, it might solve so many of the mysteries of his reactions over the past 3 years.

He has documented allergies to milk, eggs, beef, soy, peanuts, corn and apples. He has (as far as we can tell) outgrown the milk, eggs and beef. He no longer tests positive for peanuts, but we aren't going to trial them until the doctor gives the go ahead after more testing.

I can't find much about coconut and palm allergies. Does anyone have any resources? It looks like the major issue is in health/beauty products and the fact that vitamin A fortified foods are everywhere.

We're also still trying to figure out the corn stuff, so any resources on that would be great as well!

thanks in advance!!

My dd reacted to coconut. I'm not sure if she's outgrown it. She does fine with palm, though, at least she's fine with spectrum palm shortening.

Corn is in everything. And it's not a "top 8" so it's often disguised. Citric acid is in a ton of stuff. And dextrose and maltodextrin.

My kids are okay with palm/coconut.

i know...

you should see the list for coconut and palm...

the only thing that is getting me through this right now is knowing that I have never yet been wrong about anything he is reacting to...

I too am allergic to coconut, soy, peanuts, and evil CORN!(As well as a plethora of other foods and environmentals).

My go-to source for corn-free stuff is: http://corn-freefoods.blogspot.com/2...-dec-2007.html

I avoid everything on the Corn Allergen List as best I can.

There is a News for Corn Avoiders blog as well: http://no-corn.blogspot.com/ (I am currently going through a reaction to 'fresh' spinach--see the latest blog post)

Also, there is an Avoiding Corn forum on the Delphi Network that I go to daily for updates and more ideas on what to eat or things we need to watch out for.

There are a lot of celiacs and people with multiple allergies there as well.

I have not been able to find much info on coconut allergy either. The vitamin A palmitate I am pretty sure is in a corny base, as are most fortifications(as in milk and fortified grain products).

I have found that I cannot use anything containing Sodium lauryl sulfate(or any similar name), cocamidapropyl betaine(spelling?), or things with PEG-and and word after that. Glycerine is often from palm. And of course the obvious coconut/palm stuff listed on everything at the health food store.

I quit using shampoo and conventional body washes last summer.
I use baking soda and (currently) Walmart brand Apple Cider Vinegar for my hair. Sometimes I put TTO or Lavender EO in the rinse.

I use Blue House Soaps' Crunchy Mama Shampoo ONLY(her other products contain coconut and soy) and request no glycerine when I order, and ONLY unscented or an EO that I know is ok for me. This is also used for hand soap and occasionally body wash. She does sell small quantities so you can test it before committing to a whole bottle.

I also use a olive oil castille bar soap made by a WAHM and scented with only safe EO's.

For lotion, the only thing I find safe for me is olive oil. I pour a dab in my palm and rub it in my hands/face/body. I have been tentatively using walmart's knockoff of Aveeno since my skin is so dry--so far it's been ok but I hesitate to use it much since it contains dimethicone and I don't like to use a lot of that.

Gotta go--hope that helps!
